M14 What can be done r/t calibre.

I've known people who have had success installing custom barrels in .243 Win, 7mm-08, 260 Rem.

Frankly, I'd love a .22-250 tight twist barrel for some earthpig and coyote shooting! That would be a barrel of laughs..... :D

Thoughts anyone?

well, springfield armory made an m1a in 243 for a while, but discontinued due to lack of sales as well feeding problems-didn't like the "light" bullets- technically, you should be able to to do anything based on the 308 case- and limited to 170 grain bullets or less- i've been down as low as 130 and it gives feeding problems down there

I'm pondering making up some custom barrels in the new year. Was planning on .308 but this thread and another similar, might provoke me to try another caliber.
I wonder if changing port location, relocating gas system, altering gas plug internal volume, would be avenues to explore for some of the lighter caliber choices.
Could be an interesting project(s)

The .308 cartridge is one of the most versatile around, with a few factory loads using light bullet some what available.

Before getting complicated with rechambering, rebarrelling, etc, maybe try some factory commercially available loads like;
Hornady 125 gr TAP ammo,
Winchester 125 Gr PSP,
Remington 125 Gr "managed recoil"
or if you can find some, the discontinued Remington Accelerator SABOT .223 loads.

" In 1977 Remington introduced the Accelerator in 3 calibers: 30-30, 308, 30-06. These are a special loading of the standard cartridge, using a plastic sabot that enables a .22" diameter projectile to be discharged from a .30" diameter barrel.

Velocities of more than 4,000 feet per second are possible.

You can buy the sabots separately and load your own .223/ .308."

I've shot up a few boxes of the rem sabots, and a several hundred rounds of reloaded 123 Gr Lapua .310" bullets loaded in .308 Win cases, to duplicate 7.62X39 Russian ballistics. Both of these were reliable and accurate for me in my 14s,

Hey Laz, do you have a source for the sabots? This sounds like a really interesting little reloading project.

Hey M14Doc; ever consider a .260 Rem? I recently became interested in something like this but the .308 doesn't really do it for me, I'd like something a little flatter shooting, and accurate. Kind of a varmint/coyote/light big game rifle. I'm thinking it should be the easiest conversion out there. I know others have had the same idea but I've never heard whether their idea came to fruition or not. Soo... how hard and more important how expensive?

The garand has been converted to 458wm any caliber is possible with the M14 as well.

me too, or a 270 if that is possible.

Case is too long.

I'm quite happy leaving my M-14 as is... if I wanted a rifle in .243, .223, 7.62x39, etc, etc, etc... I'd just buy one already chambered for it.

Those .22/.30 sabots do sound cool though. Never seen any for sale. Anyone have any info?
