I bought a Savage 111 from Cabelas about 2 months ago with the intention of starting my first project gun. Its a LA in .270 win. I began by taking of the simmons scope(put it on my 597). I removed the 2 peice mounts when I realized that my Bushnell replacement wasn't long enough to span the action. I replaced them with a 1 peice aluminium picatiny rail from lebarons. After a good break-in session I was convinced I'd chosen the right rifle to start.

I am now looking for a good barrel, I was thinking a 24" heavy sporter or varmint contour shilen from mystic precision. Is 24" a good length for the 270? It gonna double as my new deer/bear/coyote rifle so weight is a bit of an issue. I shoot out to 500 yards at the range with my HB 22-250 and want to do even better with my 270.

Im gonna get a timney trigger from mystic too.

I want to get a laminate stock from rifle-stocks.com

SSS has a tactical bolt handle for $42, that seems pretty steap to me, especially considering it will be like $70 by the time I get it. Does anyone in canada sell them?

I would like to have it parkarized as well. Where can I get this done? Im in Ottawa, Is there a local shop to do this for me?

Has anyone dealt with these dealers? How was thier service?

I figure that with the initial cost of the rifle, the barrel, trigger and stock, Ill have about 1200 - 1500 invested.

I have several bushnell scopes and never had a bad experience. I think 400-600 will be price range. I'd like something with a side parallax adjustment. Any suggestions? I am looking at a Nikon Monarch 4-16x42mm, or maybe the 2.5-10x50mm with the BDC. A bushnell 3200 5-15x40 would surffice as well I think

Any info or suggestion will be much appreciated.

I would contact Ian Robertson in Ottawa he has some .284 cal barrels and could handle your job, go with 284cal IE: 280 Rem way better bullet choices and better BCs than .270-277cal don't think he does parkerizing ?

I have over 300 .270 casings and about 1000 bullets, plus my reloading gear so a change in caliber isn't for me. Besides I love the .270 win!

Since I have answered these questions in the email, I will offer some suggestions on the Scope.

The Nikon Monarch is a great scope with very nice optics and a side focus that works. compared to the Elite 3200, the Nikon will have clearer optics but the ELite will have a larger apparent field of view.

I would recommend the new Sightron SII Big Sky scopes. The ones I have used have superb optics, very good low light capabilities, tons of eye relief, nice wide field of view and reliable tracking. A bit more money then the Nikon but I feel a better overall scope.

I would suggest the mildot reticle version. I am presently shooting a 6.5X20 - 50mm and love it. I think the 4.5X14 would be a better fit on a walkabout hunting rig

Sierra does make a Matchking bullet for the .270 and it will stay supersonic beyond 1000 yds. I've only tried it out to 700 yds. It doesn't have the BC of the 6.5 and 7mm match bullets but it isn't too bad. Berger makes .270 bullets with good BC's.

HMR - I think that 24 inches is about perfect for the 270. I shoot 140 accubonds with h4831sc and can safely get them to about 3000 fps in a 24 inch Gaillard No 1. I have found that this powder is more temp stable other good 270 powders and gives small spreads on the chrony which is important if you intend to shoot at longer ranges. I have a 14 power scope and was able to shoot a 6 inch group at 730 yards. Hope this helps.
Good luck
