Hey there,

I am looking into getting back into hunting. When I was in high school I did quite a bit of hunting (ducks, geese, squirrels, deer, etc) and always enjoyed it. I eventually stopped hunting but I would like to start again. I'm a US Citizen living in Ontario with Permanent Residency. I know that I need to get my PAL to license a firearm, but what else? I saw that there is a hunting course, but do I need to take the course or can I just do the exam? I took a couple courses when I was younger so my knowledge base is there..

Also, I have a 20 gauge and .22 at my parents in the US. Could my father simply mail the weapons to me once I have my PAL etc?

Have you ever had an Ontario Outdoors Card (hunting license)? If so its just a matter of renewing your card. If not, I would suggest taking the hunter safety course. They offer both the hunting course and the PAL course together.

You could challenge the PAL test, but I don't think you can challenge the Hunting part.

No, I've never had an Ontario Outdoors Card, I'll look into the hunting course.

and no you cannot mail firearms. you have to get the appropriate paerwork from the us to export and the import from canada as well as registering the guns.

Is it a pain in the ass to get the paperwork?

In Alberta, if you've ever possessed a hunting license in any province (and possibly state??) you don't need to take the hunter safety test or course. Not sure about Ontario...

You could certainly bring the firearms up to Canada, but you would need to register them first.

I did have a hunting license in Illinois.

I have friends come up from Illinois and Iowa to duck hunt, they just show their US hunting licence to buy a Canadian licence.

From the regs...

NOTE: New residents of Ontario have one opportunity to
successfully challenge the Ontario Hunter Education Exam,
without having to take the Ontario Hunter Education Course,
if they can provide proof of having been issued a resident
hunting licence or completing a hunter education course in
any jurisdiction of which they were a resident at the time.

You can only challenge it once, but need proof of your Illinois license...You can also challenge the PAL...
