I know of a WWII grenade " with detonator misssing and unknown if contains main charge" Is this a regulated item that would be illegal to possess if I were to acquire it?
Thanks, Ed

Unless it is confirmed as inert have the owner call EOD and get rid of it. There are training grenades available for display or play. I don't know about legality issues, but safety trumps everything with old unknown/unproven ordnance.

What type of Grende? American, British, German, etc? If the grenade still contains its main filling, this could be exceptionally dangerous as some fillings crystalized over time making them sensitive to friction and shock. Call your local police and have them contact the nearest military EOD team. It is their responsibility to handle military ordnance. For gawds sake, don't let the local police play with the grenade, they lack detailed knowledge of military ordnance.

Reminded me of a training grenade one of the folks had in basic. One little packet of black powder to blow the cork out of the bottom and make a noise. He decided he wanted a larger noise, so he removed those little packets from several grenades and inserted them in one. Luckily he threw it a distance into some undergrowth. KA-BOOM!:eek:

Bah,

In the end it means you no longer have the ability to have fun with explosives.

Give it to me. I'll BIP it right in the back of the farm!!!!

Life was so much more exciting when an HA meant you could blow up anything that wasn't in a box.

Knowing Garand personally (well I did 20yrs ago), he's not $hiting you. He knows what he is saying. Don't trust anyone's opinion that a grenade is deactivated until categorically proven otherwise.

recently a 25mm "training round" was on e bay. turned out to be a 25mm apfsdt. im pretty sure the monkey who was selling it is now having a nice chat with rcmp and the local mp's.

Better safe than sorry. Isn't there a way though to unscrew the primer assembly at the top and physically check just to be safe? I believe, I'll check on the internet that the main charge was put inside the grenade then the primer assembly(spoon, primer charge, etc.) was then screwed into the top of the grenade. Better tape the spoon and pin just in case with duck tape. What year or make is it? I'm sure we can look it up. Maybe post a picture. It may be completely de-activated but best to make sure. I believe you said the primer assembly is already gone can you see inside?

My favorite UXB story is the pair of good-ole-boys who dragged one of the "Ornamental" 5"/38 shells from their legion down to the dump and shot it with a 30-30. Apparently quite the explosion. The other three still in the building were found to be live as well.

Don't try and unscrew anything. Follow the very good advice posted above. If it's not drilled/marked as a training round or souvenir treat it as UXB. You don't want to end up like one of those legless kids from Vietnam...

And thats what I do at work, I'm one of the few in Canada that shoot experimental explosives!!!

I appreciate the vote of confidence (especially from the guy who keeps reminding me that he beat me with my own rifle!). :):):)
