Aperture and Ghost Ring Sights for Marlin 336

On a Marlin, the Williams Foolproof works well as does a Redfield aperture sight if they still make it. For woods hunting I always screw the aperture out and look through the threaded hole, much faster and better in low light.

A ghost ring sight is an aperature sight! It's just that the aperature (hole) is larger in the ghost ring than most people associate with an aperature (peep) sight. The ghost ring comes with a choice of two size holes to use.
The ghost ring is generally considered a little faster sight to get on a moving target with, but by taking the screw in part out of the standard aperature, there really isn't much difference.
I would prefer the standard aperature, a good Williams, Refield or Lyman, with their more precise adjustments, on the 30-30 Marlin.

Give Skinners sights a look. They do everything well without the bulk. They're the best I've used and shipping to Canada is no problem.

Here's the link---- h ttp://skinnersights.com/

Here's mine mounted on my 1895. They have a nice low-profile and mount clean which is important to me as my rifles ride in a scabbard. All my Marlins wear Skinners.

Skinners are nice, the only complaint I have about them is windage is difficult to adjust. He was actually working on a vernier sight of sorts that looked interesting.
Williams FP sights can be ordered directly from Williams also.

I have an X-S or know called Ashley Outdoors on my 1894 ,but they make them for the 336 and are awsome. The ghost ring is threaaded inside so you can put in regular apertures so you get the best of both worlds!!It is also very easy to adjust elevation and windage, best regards Dale in T-Bay:wave:

Was wondering which brands are the best? Is it better to get aperture or ghost ring sights? Who in Canada sells them?

I'm a big fan of the Williams. A Marbles or Lyman tang sight might alos be considered.

Last Williams I got was from cabelas.ca but I think most of the big name stores carry them.

A ghost ring is an aperture sight with a large aperture. Many aperture sights offer different size apertures that can be screwed in.

I have skinner sights on one rifle and XS on the other. I like them both. They both work well, both excellent products. The skinner does take more work to get dialed in for windage though.

I ordered both of them directly from their websites.

Were Can you order XS sights from these days and have them shipped to the great white north?? I have skinner sights on a couple but would also really like to try the XS. Any help would be appreciated.

There is more to the description of a ghost ring than to say it is simply a peep sight with a large aperture. Yes the aperture is larger than is common in a peep sight, up to a quarter inch, but where the peep sight has a wide rim (sometimes very wide) the ghost ring has a very thin rim. Thus simply drilling out the aperture of a peep sight does not necessarily a ghost ring make. The ghost ring's rim, "ghosts" out of focus, then out of your vision all together as you focus on the front sight. By contrast a target shooter's peep sight has a tiny aperture in a large disk that completely blocks the view except through the tiny aperture. While not very fast it is very precise. Where as the ghost ring is precise enough for practical marksmanship, it is also very fast to pickup.
