Hey guys,

I'm new at this part, so keep the flaming to a minimum:D

What are the rules regarding hunting Coyotes in Alberta?

I was just on the Alberta hunting website and I can't find anything. The reason I ask is a friend of mine has an acreage and is having trouble with the coyotes coming after his chickens. He was wanting some help to "reduce" the population somewhat...

Thanks for the help everyone!

Go to Alberta Hunting Regulations 2009, go to General Regulations, scroll down to this under Hunting privileges:

*Exception: if a big game season (other than a cougar season) is open in the area he or she is hunting, then the Non-resident or Non-resident Alien who holds a big game licence may hunt coyote only in the WMU or area where their big game licence is valid. "

are you sure about this??? i would double check

I was actually just kidding about the bowhunting thing, but I did a little investigating just to see what the laws are, and it turns out that you can't hunt anything with any weapon between those times.

Suputin,

This is found in the Alberta hunting regulations:

"It is unlawful to:
...
hunt any wildlife or discharge a firearm between one-half hour after sunset and one-half hour before sunrise. (See sunrise/sunset table)"

Suputin,

Well, I just scoured the Firearms act, as well as the Criminal code, and I couldn't find anything about discharging a firearm at certain times of the day. I'm not sure where the Alberta regulations got that "law" from, but I would love it if you could prove me wrong. I've had a few opportunities to shoot howling coyotes at night...

Right you are, a j cave. Here is a quote from the Alberta provincial legislation in the Wildlife act:

Hunting at night

28 A person shall not hunt wildlife, except by trapping, during the period commencing at 1/2 hour after sunset and ending at 1/2 hour before sunrise the following day.

1984 cW‑9.1 s30;1996 c33 s20

.....

Discharge of firearm at night

53 Except at a lawfully established and operated shooting range, a person shall not discharge a firearm during the period referred to in section 28.

1996 c33 s39
