Cheap Travel Hunting

In 2008 I managed to get a couple of days hunting Roe deer in England while visiting a friend. It was surprisingly affordable.

On another thread a CGN'er mentioned traveling to Wyoming (IIRC) to hunt Antelope with his kid, also surprisingly affordable.

I was wondering if anyone else had ideas and approximate costs on other adventurous hunts outside of their home province? Hunting opportunities that could be had for, say, less then $300 CAD? I have a friend who has gone on a number of cull hunts in South Africa (large ranch - high fence stuff - like a lot of Texas I would assume) for very little money.

I am thinking of mostly "non-trophy" hunts such as culls and do-it-yourself opportunities, but cheap options for head-gear wouldn't be ruled out!

Ideas anyone?

Here is my first Roe:

That's a great pic! I look forward to some of the guys responses! I must admit, $300 is frighteningly CHEAP! And, being a cheap kinda guy, you have my attention!

Cheers

I've been looking at sites in Texas that offer wild boar hunts. You can get accomodations and guiding for $150-$300 per day, depending on how fancy you want and guarantees, etc. Looks like fun as there are many different styles of hunt available.

I too have been looking at boar hunts in Texas. My girlfriends' sister is in Austin so lodging is no problem. I wouldn't want to hunt those places where you shoot them at feeders though. I wonder if you'd be able to bring back the meat?

Good question about the meat coming back. Definately something to look into as I could see there being a prohibition to protect the hog industry from disease. Shooting them at a feeder would be something of a letdown. A handgun hunt with dogs would be a rush.

To those interested in Roe;

The rifle is my friends, but the guide should always have one you can use. Getting your own rifle into England is probably possible, but you think the Gov BS around firearms is bad here .....

Hunting cull bucks shouldn't cost too much, from about 200 CAD per day, with a chance to shoot 1 - 3 or so bucks. Make sure you and the stalker have a clear understanding of what you are looking for. Cull bucks are included in the day rate, but if you shoot a big trophy buck expect to pay through the nose. We saw a "gold medal" buck that the stalker at Cranborn was hoping to put a German client onto the next day, of course I had to ask how much; would have cost me $4000 + CAD if I had shot him!

I have thought of a pig hunt as well, I think you are allowed more then one in most places. I need a reason to go use my 44. Someone took a pig in Hawaii with a knife from here, and he brought some meat back, up to 40 lbs or something.

Need more hunting information!
Too much snow outside!

Anyone hunt turkeys in Idaho? I heard it was actually cheaper than BC.

How about Javalena in Arizona, Texas or New Mexico?

Any affordable opportunities in Australia or New Zealand?

I may be in Sierra Leone next winter for work, any opportunities? I know they have guinea fowl, but what else??

And what about Canada? My Dad and uncle come out chasing pheasants, costs them about $80 in licenses IIRC. Friends from BC come for archery elk, under $200 for the paperwork. I know there is (was?) a non-resident hunt in Sask; licenses around $200? What else? Where have you gone?

Again, cheap is a relative term in this thread, in the OP I said around $300 CAD, but maybe I should have said "per day", but the key to that would be that you could go for just a day. In other words, $300/day is no longer cheap if it is a $3000 hunt that happens to last 10 days.

If anyone is thinking of hunting SA in the near future- send me a PM - I have many.many friends and contacts out there.

Here is an example for example.....

www.indabusheesafaris.co.za - great place to hunt, If warthogs are your thing this is the place to get one (bow hunters especially welcome)

Perhaps this one?

http://www.huntingworld.de/ - nowhere near gangsta city, and situated near some of the best surfing in the world, you may want to do the Garden route to Cape Town on your way out - some of the best scenery in SA.

http://www.boesmanlandsafaris.com

on the other side of the country, for those wanting to take in the fabulous offerings in Botswana and the world renown Chobe National Park or the Okavango delta.......

as you can see the opportunities are endless, and Oh! non of these places or people are related to me - I just happen to know quite a few people from my old homeland.

Thanks Kudu. Interesting info. Question for you, in the first outfit, do they offer any non-trophy or cull hunts?

Most decent outfits out there offer non trophy / meat animals. If they don't - don't waste your time or money going there!

I know that for example - near the first one on the list, there is another outfit that takes in your dead animal and swop's it out for dried jerky (Biltong)

The last time I hunted there (April last year) I shot two impala, two wildebeest and a warthog, On the way back to JHB I stopped in and left with dried meat - of course once the meat has dried you only get about 1/3 - 1/4 of the original weight and for the small fee that I paid it was well worth it.

My Family and friends received some really good "beer meat" as a small gift from me when I left, and that of course is always a nice way to say your goodbye's.
