Hey guys,

New around here - And actually just passed the Firearms Safty Course this evening! (100% on practical, 90% written!). In early January I will be taking the restricted course as well, then applying for my license (and as well applying for a job at brinks, lol)

I've more or less decided I would like to get a Glock 17 as my first handgun. Now if i'm unable to find one in good shape used, I will be looking to buy new. Now from what i've seen in online canadian retailers/local stores it seems the Glock 17 is a few hundred dollars more in canadian funds , than buying one in the US (even after the exchange)

Is it possible, to purchase a G17 either online, or locally from a gun store in the US. Then cross over to canada and register it here? If I were to buy online I could ship it to Menkes (US parcel pickup place, just under Manitoba)

I know you need to get an ATT, would you be able to get one BEFORE purchasing the firearm? Or how would this work?

Just trying to find out my best option here, and I don't mind driving an hour or two south to save a few hundred dollars.

Thanks guys,

Shay

So far as I understand it from what I've read American law states that you can only export a firearm from the United States through a licensed firearm exporter and these people almost all charge fees that run in the hundreds per firearm (I've checked since I have some friends in the US that might be able to hook me up with hardware on the cheap).

If you have a friend who is or has himself a friend who is an exporter and they can do it all for you cheaper than the average then its probably going to be nice for you, but otherwise you'll probably lose as much importing a used American Glock as you would just buying a new one here.

I'm not an expert, hell I'm a damned noob, so anyone feel free to contradict me.

I don't mean this in a rude way, but would you mind explaining specifically how I wouldnt save? Unless there is something i'm missing.

Here is my example.

FrontierFirearms.ca , G17 - $719.95

GlockWorld (USA) G17 $459 + $Shipping ($510 CAN)

So it's still $209 cheaper in the US. Call it less than $50 in gas there and back (good old civic) and its still $150 cheaper...seems to be worth it - unless theres some sort of hidden fee's i'm missing? Since it's built in USA there is no duty on it.

Edit: Thaks P*Funk for the information, i'll try and look into this more and see if its worth it or not.

FIREARMS EXPORT SERVICE: CANADA
$249 for the first gun, $99 for each additional gun on the same purchase order.

+ 3% of the value of the export license*

Check out Daves Sport shop a sponser up top. All the export paperwork needed will cost you money even if you try to do it yourself.

Many people try only to find out that after months of paperwork and $50 hare and $50 there they should have bought in Canada and could of had it in a week or less.

you need to calll gun stores stateside and see if they will export them and what they will charge. I am right on the border here in niagara and there is a shop in buffalo that does all the paperwork and will drive the gun to the border. All you need to do is register the gun and get an att to go pick it up. For me that makes it worth it cuz it only costs $10 in gas(good ol civic) Now I am on the Buffalo border so the mag restrictions are the same. This will be different for you and you will also have to pay to have the mags pinned. So assuming you will be paying $100 dollars minimum for the export, and $50 for gas. Your price just went up to $660. You can find Glocks here in Canada for the same price. This process usually doesnt make much sence for cheaper handguns, and I would only use these types of services for high end guns, and hard to find guns in canada.

Example I have been thinking of purchasing:

Beretta CX4 Storm:
Canada - $1100+tax = $1250
States - $800 + $100 + tax(on $800) = $905 + Exchange

So I will be saving anywhere from $300 - $250 on my purchase.

If all y'want is a G17 even I would say just buy one here... Shop around and you'll get a good deal. I paid about $637ea for two new G17's a while ago purolator delivered right to my door.

Thanks for the information guys. I'll check out Canadaammo.com when I get my license and what not.

Question about getting it shipped to my door - Do I need to get an ATT BEFORE buying online, since technically i'm not transporting it yet?

If you buy online, you don't even have to worry about the ATT to get it home- The dealer takes care of that for you.

Oh?

lol... trust me, there are lots and lots of previous threads with basically all the information you need posted here numerous times.

I do trust you on this, as this is an extremely large forum - however I was just indicating to the person whom told me to use the search function...that as shown in my picture when searched for keywords regarding this thread, nothing came up.

not knowing how to use the search and being a smart ass about it.. Won't gain you any points...

But I'm in a generous mood.. search for IIC
search for Daves
or buffalo (looking for buffalo gun center)

search for import
or export

the search function is not yahoo or google... Vbulletin isn't known for it's search tool.
