VZ-58 side mount by Kasat - what was its fate?

Do you mean horizontal distance?
I measured the horizontal and vertical distances on the two mounts seen here:

Horizontal distance from inner face to center of rail/scope:
Mount pictured on right: 14mm
Mount pictured on left: ~23-24mm
Vertical distance from bottom of mount to top of (Weaver?) rail:
Mount pictured on right: 102mm
Mount pictured on left: 85mm

Does anyone know what, if any standards there are for AK-style or SVD-style mount dimensions?

It seems to me that there is no standard, as these two mounts I have photographed are both AK-style, yet vary drastically in measurements.

I would ideally like a mount with more horizontal distance (to center the scope over the bore) and less vertical distance (to reduce the height over the bore).

Is there any difference in these distances between AK and SVD mounts?

Aaaaarrrggghhhh!!! Damn you, non-standardized manufacturing methods and practices!!!!!

vertically SVD style is lower than AK, horizontally they seems to be about the same but I will check.
I will try to post drawings with dimensions later tonight if I have a time, otherwise I will do it tomorrow morning.

One more side mount

Here is my version of the side mount. I was unsure of the stability of the stamped sheet metal plate that the gun came with so I cnc'd a new plate to fit on the end of the reciever. In the picture, I have an SVD style mount. It supports a 6x42D POSP scope from Eastwave.

Ok, I was not allowed to publish original factory scope drawings...However, I have drawing of the side mount with ring adapter that I can share. The dimensions with asterisk are of interest. On AK style POPS 4x24 scope they are 98 mm "height" and 7 mm "width". On SVD POPS 4x24 - 85 mm and 4.5mm accordingly.

I've also promised the front view of the scoped CZ. Sorry for poor quality...I took the picture around midnight after I got home from Oilers game of frustration…

Hey TeaPot2,
Thanks for the pic and diagram.
I just want to make sure I am interpreting them correctly.
In the picture (where the camera is looking down the bore), I believe that is an integrated optic/mount, SVD style. Correct?

As for the dimensions, I think you may have misunderstood what I was trying to get a measurement for. Of the two things you asterisked the height you listed for the AK and SVD mounts sound about right, but the widths sounds WAY too small. Are you sure you are measuring the horizontal distance from the inner face (where the side of the mount touches the rail) to the center of the optic? Because 7 mm and 4.5 mm sound really small. That's even less than my mounts, and judging from your camera photo, your mount looks like it would measure more horizontally than mine.
Could you please double check that?
Thanks for the help.

No, it's AK. SVD sits lower. I will take picture with SVD from the same point tonight.

The measurements are correct. I'm surprised myself

Wow, your rail must be pretty thin compared to mine. I guess because yours is attached right into the receiver.

Would my rail (seen below) be compatible with both AK and SVD mounts?

Looking forward to the SVD mount head-on pic.

Yes

Yes they both would fit to the rail. If the rail is about 120 mm then eye relief should be in the same spot for both. note the difference in mount types on pics (my camera is dying)

here it is, will charge the camera and retake picture if it's not clear:

Hey Teapot, from what i can tell the AK mount is slightly recessed compared to the SVD mount, is that the case? If so does it affect the looking through the scope where you have your rail on your rifle. It seem like people are mounting their SVD rails further forward on the receiver compared to AK ones.

Thanks,

Jacko

TeaPot2,
Thanks for the pics. What I want to know is how do you keep the spent casings from smacking into your mount/optic if you aren't using a deflector AND your optic is sitting low and centered over the bore???
Is the deflector really necessary of just a precaution?

I just picked up my new mig welder today and will be making new receiver covers to accommodate these scopes.

The mounting position depends on the particular rail, SVD mount has a stopping pin at the front while AK mount stops at the back...

My SKS doesn't hit the scope. My CZ is new never fired. I will find out with the next trip to the range
