My wife is always watching my gunlocker so instead of trying to lay away a rifle for coyotes I decided to upgrade my sks for the job as the majority of the shots were about 100 yrds as I hunt bush and not fields, Apparently in ontario the biggest round allowed for coyotes is a 270 does this mean my 30 cal 7.62 is not allowed because I checked the ballistics and the 270 has much more range and alot more juice so I cant figure it out
 
Re-read the regs. You can shoot a coyote with whatever the heck you want, with the exception of a few townships.

The ".270 law" is one of the most misunderstood, misquoted laws in the hunting regs

^^Yep I agree^^ Its a common misconseptin that there is some mysterious caliber restriction. The only time there is a restriction is in certain townships (as mentioned above), and when there is a big game open season. Basically if there is an open season for big game, you cannot possess anything larger than a .22 (or no2 shot for SG) unless you hold a tag for that particular big game as well.

Take out the SKS and knock em down.
 
The <.275 cal. limit only applies to the most populous part of southern Ont....check the reg's for exact townships.(think GTA and area)

Give'r with the SKS. :)
 
I use the .303 and my cousin uses his .308 works good
Also use the shotgun w/ slugs when deer hunting.
thinking of getting a .223 But I need to find one cheap tho..

Some counties and municipalities say nothing greater than .270(mostly around TO), in some it's .275 calibre(mostly West of Guelph. And it's the cartridge name not the bullet diameter. So a .270 win is ok, but a .276 Pedersen, you won't find a rifle chambered in it, is not.). In those areas, you cannot use your SKS.
You'd have to check the local by-laws to be sure. Those can usually be found on-line or at the municipal office. Most of the municipalities are named on the Hunting reg small game page. The MNR office in the WMU you hunt should be able to tell you too. Likely a lot faster asking them.
Has nothing to do with ballistics. Nothing to do with logic either. It was an arbitrary decision made by people who have/had no idea what they're talking about.
 
The law was started after the end of WW2 to keep all the 30 cal milsurp from being used on small game in populated areas as I was told.
 
It's clearly in the regs....why not take a look rather then reading all the "I thoughts" here.

It deals with a few counties in Southern Ontario, but not all of them.

The only other thing may be a municipal bylaw.

cap muzzle-loading gun, for hunting small game in the
counties of Brant, Elgin, Essex, Huron, Lambton, Middlesex,
Northumberland, Oxford, Perth and Wellington and the
regional municipalities of Chatham/Kent, Durham, the
former regional municipalities of Haldimand-Norfolk and
Hamilton-Wentworth, Halton, Niagara, Peel, Waterloo and
York and the City of Toronto."

These are all Provincial laws. I live in niagara and mot of the by laws here say .22 cal. I called all of them last winter and they were all Different. Wainfleets by law says nothing with a riflled barrel:eek:. I guess all those guys with slug barrels are breaking the law during deer season.
 
PEI Has a caliber restriction.
It sucks. I'd like to use 30-30 and get some practice for deer season. But no go.

It's an archaic law by uninformed who think the bigger the caliber the longer distance it'll travel.

I always wonder how those guys down south suddenly became legal deer hunters in shotgun only season when they use rifled guns & a single projectile, doesn't seem like a shotgun to me!

You'll be way more satisfied using the .308 IMO. Much better accuracy at longer distances. I shot a 'yote on opening day of deer season here with my Savage Mod12 FV "Varmint" .308 at about 275 yrds. Theres NO way I could have done that with my SKS.

Finally, somebody got it right! Nice , thanks for the clarificaition.

Like someone said if you don't check yourself , you'll end up in trouble with the man ! Don't rely on "I think" !
