ATC remote area carry handguns I recommend...

I used to feel the same way but then I started spending a lot of time in grizzly country and heard from a fellow CGNTZ member that emptied his G20 into/at a grizzly that was never found afterwards.

If he walked away, the G20 worked just fine.

There is a major difference between hunting and stopping rounds do not confuse the two...

This always draws arguments (but this is Cams thread anyways), but there is also a major difference between 'stopping' an animal, and making an animal decide you are too painful a meal.

Caliber and firearm discussions are always good, but never forget rule #1: Have a gun.

To me when an ATC gun is at its best it must fall within a very narrow group of parameters. The gun must be powerful, yet controllable enough for fast follow up shots.

The gun I most often carry now is a .44 Ruger Vaquero with a 45/8" barrel.

Boomer, can you efficiently fire a Vaquero with one hand? And if yes/no, do you consider that to be important?

With the shooter in question, I am positive he made some if not all his hits. He is an accomplished shooter.

rgv I'll add my thoughts on this if you don't mind...

I am very proficient at shooting single actions one handed I even won several Cowboy Action competitions shooting dualist, for me the only issue and the reason to go to double actions as I stated I was thinking faster reloads if I ever needed them.

I didn't mean to insult or anything. Situations like that can be hard even for an accomplished shooter. I do have to echo that the weapon was effective though. He is alive and unharmed. Hopefully the bear expired quickly after running away.

I think that most shooters, ecspecially pistol shooters think that they are better than they really are. I see guys routinely shoot a couple rounds every 6 months or so and call themselves good.

I also think that although I would love to see more people able to carry a pistol I want those people to be proficient. I am here to say that I have seen John shoot and he is proficient.

I also think that some people think that they can rock out their Glock 20 at a bear and all is good. I don't think that the 10mm is enough for the bear and I also think that the 460's and 500's are too much for the shooter. You need to find a happy middle ground.

For me it is the 44mag.

I can get by shooting a hard kicker with one hand, and I think given specific circumstances it could prove useful; such as being in a sleeping bag when a bear grabs you, or perhaps working in a loud noisy environment like drilling and a bear is on you before your realize it. Machinery noise isn't much of a deterrent, and if they have heard it for some time, they might even come over to check it out. Under such circumstances if you are caught unaware, you might have to fire the first shot very quickly, and hopefully if a second shot is needed you have time to use both hands and place it more precisely.

Ok, this is my synpospis...Autoloaders aren't recommend unless ''Hotloaded'' & slight modifications (No stock pistol would be a candidate)..Barrel change & springs for high pressures..?

-Seems single action beats double action for speed but not for reloading (6 shots+ is enough to stop anything, I agree)

-Oversized HG calibers, overated, overkill.

-In weight, something in between, not too lite but not too heavy so you can carry it in somewhat a comfortable matter.

-(Having an ATC states that the HG in service has to be visible at all time) I'd say a semi supported holster or shoulder holster would the way to go.

-High velocity & mid size diameter size bullets beats the big beast stoppers i.e. 460 -500S&W types.

-The idea is that you can stop & kill the animal, no wound it or initimidate it, so magnum calibers are in for this (Stating that the max would be a Grizzly attack.)

-Range is short so speed of discharge would in effect (In theory, you'd have a few seconds to shoot the animal, including time of contact, time of draw time for the weapon & discharge.) 3 seconds OA?

I have settled on a stock, 7.5" SRH in .454 Casull in a Mernicke flap holster worn cross-draw on a garrison belt.

I have a 4" .357 magnum but rarely carry it anymore.

Well, I carried for 10 years, and went with 45 ACP w/230 gr hardball.

I would actually practice with it and 10 rounds "right now" and controllability all ten would be out and on target in the same time as 2-3 rounds from the prefered hand cannons"......

Good info in here, thanks for posting.

I'm a geologist, working in remote parts of Ontario. ATC doesn't seem necessary, no brush to speak of (no suprises and no big bears anyways), and I only carry what's in my vest. .30-30 over the shoulder works ok in my situation - never needed it thus far but I do enjoy carrying it.

These photos are perfect because there is a good chance you will be shootinf from a position like that.

I have carried my Norinco 1911 with a 22# recoil spring loaded with .45-08 cartridges. No barrel replacement required. 1350fps using 200 gr LSWC. Thie load is certainly adequate for Black Bears. The 1911 can be shot faster and reloaded if necessary faster than any revolver in mortal hands. Given a choice I carry a 12 gauge shotgun with slugs, with the 1911 as back-up.

Whatever you choose practice with it and learn to shoot your gun quickly.

Ummm, I cast the H&G Saeco copy and they run through my Norc like hot butter. I have even shot a 260 gr bullet designed for the .45LC through the gun with ease and it has a very sharp flat meplat. The latter is like throwing rocks.

I would get yuor gun throated if necessary. The 200 gr LSWC is a great target/defensive round as you know.
