I'm in an experimental mood for IPSC. I feel like competing in the open division using my plain 'ol standard single stack 1911 minor 9mm and my mags arranged for open (way in front of the hip bone). I also plan to tac load all the time unless I'm completely empty. I don't really care about my time as long as I'm accurate and smooth. I just want to get some legal opinion from the IPSC lawyers in this forum if this is fine. :D

Not a problem if you want to try it out. I have seen one Canadian, Mike B. , that can actually win major matches like that!!

I also shot with Ted Puente in Vegas at the US Nationals this year. He shot Open division with high a capacity Standard (Limited in the US) gun. He did very well, as in 87% of the top shooter. Not an easy deal in the US Nats.

He then used the exact same setup to shoot the Nationals in Limited division the following week and won the match!!! The best shooting Police Officer I have ever seen! His practice in a tougher division with less equipment seemed to have paid off for him.

I betcha I could hit that light

Great! Thanks 40 cal! I'm going to be the best minor open sight open division shooter in Montreal ever!! NOT! Just creating my own category in a way within the IPSC realm. Maybe I'll get a few guys to do it too and we'll be the "WHATEVER" division in OPEN.

so... you don't like standard I gather?
open is open to all;)

Standard is not really standard. It's an illusion. I just want to wear my mags like the open guys use my extended mag on my single stack 45 when I want :D.

yeah!
currently building a single stack open gun :) I know how you feel, but I won't jump in the arena with open sights :p

Just for fun I intend to shoot the first two matches in january, Barrie and Aurora, with my old Wilson .45 Accu-Comp 2 with iron sights which was a state-of-the-art 'open' gun then (there were no divisions then except revolver) in 1983. Cast bullets, 200gr swc with Bullseye, 7 round magazines (might use my 'trick' 8 rd Devel mag), leather holster and mag pouches will complete my travel back in time. The difference, of course, is that I am almost thirty years older and a lot heavier :D.

I'd love to see how well some of our top shooters could do with a decent set of iron sights but the same comps, etc.

I think the top shooters would still be on top, they tend to be the best all-around shooters whether with pistol, rifle or shotgun.

What really levels the playing field, I believe, is a complete surprise match. The best and most fun matches I remember were the surprise matches at Burlington, in the '80s and early 90s.

The four gun matches that South Peel put on were some of the most enjoyable for me as well.

I wish I could use my Wilson in IDPA !!!

I'm just saying..........

Oh, I think I need to learn to shoot again!!! :D

One good stage out of four, a double feed, a miss and a no-shoot! :D:D

He, he, he, he, just like the old days!

Well run match, thanks Barrie guys, I had a ball. (the chile after was the best part!)

Thanks to Arancio for the loan of an 8 round mag.

Cheers

They would do about the same, they are the top shooters because they train, and are extrememly good at what they do...

that being said, you would probably be more suprprised what the average shooter would do.

I have used a Glock 17 and XD40 Tactical in the open division for something to do, I can hold my own, middle of the pack is still middle of the pack.

It depends on the distance of the targets

IMHO...

Over 20 meters...optics win
10-15ish meters it's a wash
under 10 meters...irons sites are faster (optics just get in the way)

...and where the hell have you been hiding??
