Hey guys, need help identifying this:

mystery.jpg

Sorry about the poor picture quality, composited it from already crappy photos. The owner doesn't know jack about it, other than it is '6.5' and they keep repeating that to me, never including the length. I was originally interested, hoping it was 6.5x55mm but odds are its 6.5x57 - Im guessing its a Carcano, judging by the single-piece trigger guard and magazine, but Im the opposite of an expert.

Opinions and references welcome!

It could be a sporterized 1893 or 1895 Mannlicher. The chambering could very well be 6.5x53R, which is a rimmed cartridge.

Look s like a Mannlicher-Schönauer in 6.5 x 54mm.

it is said that they have some of the smoothest actions and the
6.5mm Mannlicher-Schönauer is an excellent caliber, but you will most likely have to reload to feed it...

Looks like a sported Mannlicher Carcano.
One of the ones made up by Cooey for Eatons?
If it is, its caliber will be 6.5x54 Mannlicher Schoenauer.
If it isn't a Cooey conversion, it will be 6.5x52 Mannlicher Carcano.

I am pretty sure that all of the 6.5x54mm rifles (rimless) had the spiral magazine.

...or a 1903 mannlicher carbine with double set triggers. Not 100% sure.

I am 100% sure it is not. The 1903 had a butterknife bolt handle and the spiral magazine. The pictured rifle still has the military bolt handle.

"...tell me about the Cooey conversions..." Cooey wasn't always owned by Winchester. They were contracted, by Eatons, to make/sporterize rifles. Just like most U.S. firearm makers did for U.S department store chains.

Definitely not a Mannlicher Berthier, as they were a straight-pull action. Also, most definitely not a Mannlicher Schoenauer 1903. I am guessing that it is a Carcano, as I had one of these years ago, with DST, re-barrelled to 7x57.

1895 Steyr-Manilicher

Looks like it could be a commercilized version, of either a French navy, or Dutch service rifle chambered originally in 6.5 x 53 R, or 6.5 Dadeteau. a rimmed cartridge, which can be made from 303 British, a very popular cartridge in the early 1900's, for deer stalking and such. Good cartridge akin to the 6.5 MS, in performance. regards Bully
