I was wondering if there are any Thompson SMG... That can be owned by mear mortals... that are not prohibited. I guess converted autos would have there own class so thats out. Did any of them ever come as semi auto's and get registred as restricted.

I would like to add one to my collection but a ruger 10/22 tommy gun kit just wont cut it for me.

Tsmg

The Government covered all "the bases" when they looked at Thompson's. Even distant look a likes were considered off limits.

Without going through some extensive and special licensing, such as museum or movie support, the closest thing to a real Thompson you will be able to buy in Canada will be a deactivated one. And they aren't cheap either.

Deactivated is like a cobra without the venom its just another boring snake lol :D

the semi-auto version of the thompson was the model 1927- i've seen ONE- temendously long barrel, finned with cutts , weighed about 12-15 pounds with the stick magazine- models of 1921, 28, and m1 were all f/a so they would indeed be c/as if you could find one- however, i beleive that all the thompsons were prohibited BY NAME

I remember in the 1980's I have the choice between a Thompson, a MP 38 and a Bren MKII all converted to semi-auto and all at $550 each I bought the Bren because she was not restricted.

Yup. The bureaucrats saw a movie once, and there were mobsters, yeah, and they had Thompsons, yeah, and so, they knew, deep in their tiny little Liberal hearts that Thompsons were evil yeah, and so must be banned from mortals. Sigh. Just f**king sigh. - dan

The Thompson and look alikes were prohibited by Tory Justice Minister Kim Campbell during the Mulroney regime.

Or join the airsoft club.

I dont understand "airsoft" it might be fun when your 12 years old.

More about the thompson
I just find it funny that you can own an AR-15 which is much more dangerous only due to the fact that it fires the 5.56/223... but you can't have a low velocity, short range 45 ACP semi auto... just because some gangsters used it... in the 1930's. I would like to see the crime stats for the thompson how many times it was used in canada to commit a crime you can probally count it on one hand.

and why is the AR 15 restricted and the Swiss Arms Black Special and RobArms XCR not?

Or the FN FAL prohibited and the Norinco M305 not even restricted (not that I'm complaining about the Norc)?

Don't worry, there are several powers that be who would like to correct these anomalies, and not in our favor either. The guns you mention simply did not exist in the early 90s, so were not shown in the guns digest used to pick the prohibs from.

Agreed on the Thompson crime statistics. I wonder how many times it is even used in the US for crimes. But even if they were freely available in Canada, unfortunately the drum mags are not on the list of exempted magazines, and would be limited to 5 rounds.

The Winnipeg police service still had Thompsons in the late 70s/early 80s. A friend in the service mentioned they drew them out in response to a bank holdup and did not get stellar service from the old Thompsons. They were replaced soon after that incident.

I read on another thread that a SKS shooter had a slam fire and emptied his mag (of course only 5 rounds). But when I hear that and what caused it I worry that the powers that be will say its all too easy to modify a semi to induce full auto fire and start restricting everyone to single shots and bolt actions.

And what about the CFC looking at the CZ 858 and seeing VZ 58/AK 47 and just outright banning them.

It doesn't seem like the bureaucrats use any facts or realism (just fear mongering - T97, Walther bullpup) in rendering their judgements.

Nope, none whatsoever. I thought people were joking when they told me the government officials just flipped through a book of guns and banned anything that looked scary. They banned all AKs and AK variants by association, so no Druganovs, but I guess they didn't know about SKSs and they certainly didn't know the VZ 858 existed.

To satisfy my lust for a Thompson, I bought the 10/22 kit, and it was completely worth it.
