What the HeLL is a wsm all about? wms here, asking! I never did get into them! Am I truely missing out on something fantastic here, or is it a passing fad and most shooters will come back to earth someday and go with the old timer's cals? I don't wanna poke a nest here :nest: I really don't! Not into that. I just wanna know in plain simple words, am I missing out on something truely great? or should I just stick to what has worked for me for decades? I'm getting closer to the end of the line, just wanna do all the good stuff before D-day!
 
In my opinion its all over and only a few calibers might stay ie: 300 wsm and 270 wsm... I don't own one and never fired one... I heard they're good but i'm gonna stick to mens calibers :) seriously though i don't think there is a big difference besides the kick...
 
Not sure what you are asking? What WSM stands for? or are they any good? There is a whole pile of options out there, just people being creative I guess and coming up with some other combinations.
 
Unless you like to tinker, I'd stay with what has worked for you, and here's why - oh ya, I've owned more than a few in factory and wildcat form, as well as hand loaded for guys in all the WSM's and many of the wildcats, and like them - but then I like most guns and cartridges!:confused:

The short action thing is highly over rated IMO, unless a person wants to save every ounce of weight they can, and even then, they could likely do it in a light caliber, and the faster bolt cycling won't matter in a hunting situation.

the WSM's are not that far away from the standard magnums and such as far as velocity goes, and some have quirks such as FL sizing that some shooters do not find desirable.

Unless you handload, you may have trouble finding the cartirdge and bullet weight you want, and prices can get expensive.

You will get no more accuracy oput of a WSM than any other cartridge.

so, if you want a new rifle, and have to have a WSM, go for it.
if you want a new rifle that is some kind of weird laser beam killer, all you have to do is practise a bit more with what you have!:D

WMS in the .270 has a slight edge, but unlikely something to get excited about. I shoot one, I like it, I bought it 'cause I can, now it's a keeper. In your case, since you're near the end, why not go and buy one and have some fun....you can't take it witcha anyhow :D

I do thank you kindly, Sir. That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I shall stick to my reg cals and enjoy life with what is left of it. Blasting at targets in the off season and hunting with the reg cal rifles that I have in the safe. Thx again, so very much.
 
If you shoot 180's out of either a 300WM or 300WSM they are so close in velocity its not giving one the significant advantage over the other. So the advantage would then be the shorter action of the 300WSM, which in my opinion is inconsequential. Get whichever you prefer, but when I bought I went to 300WM because I know it is here to stay, and at the time I couldnt' say that for the short mag.
 
I did not subscribe to all the hype about the Short Magnums when they made their appearance. They are another way to get a bit more performance than standard chamberings offer. Magical qualities they do not possess. I bought one to compare it to the Magnums I already own. I own or have owned 30 cal magnums in 300H&H, 30-338, 308 Norma Mag, 300 Winchester Mag and 300 Weatherby Mag. The 300 WSM did exactly what I expected it to do. Since it has a powder capacity almost identical to the 300 H&H, the performance is about identical as well. Of course, the short action is a calling card for some, but like catnthehatt, I believe that is slight, if any, real advantage.
My WSM is quite accurate, but definitely no more so than is my present 308 Norma Mag, my 30-338,or a past 300 Win Mag. Recoil? I don't find any noticeable amount less than an equal weight 300 H&H, so don't really agree with those who assert that these kick less than the other 30 Mags. [maybe a bit less than the 300 Weatherby..] I guess they helped sell some new rifles, not a bad thing in it's own right. I have a friend begging me to sell him mine, so it will probably be gone by next fall. Shot a nice moose with it this year though, at 370 yards, One shot, double lunged him with a 180 Partition....what can you say? Regards, Eagleye.
 
short actions, barrels, make the magnums more compact. i dabbled with the 300 wsm , it was accurate and hit like a freight train. but bullet costs and availability made me sell it.
 
I like the fact that the WSM's brass is beltless. I've had some problems in the past with the area just ahead of the belt not sizing properly in the reloading process with some belted cartridges. Since there are so many new beltless offerings(WSM's,RUM's, 375 Ruger, etc...), I choose not to own any belted cartridges. My $0.02.
 
I have 2, a 300 and a 325. They do pretty much what thier case capacity says they will, no magical properties. I like them both very much, the short action really only matters if you are an alpine hunter and need to save some wieght. Ounces turn to pounds and pounds turn to pain with lots of elevation on a 5 day backpack hunt. It depends on where you hunt, when I go to Alberta to hunt whitetail I take a rifle that weighs in at 11 pounds, if I am mtn goat hunting I take a rifle that weighs under 7 pounds scoped.

I think the reduced recoil claim came from the recoil pad. The winchesters were some of the first rifles to come with a decent recoil pad, that was soft and gummy to absorb some of the recoil.

It was introduced in 2001, 8 years and still selling well. The ammo is now available at most Canadian tire and Walmart stores, and retails for the same as 300 win mag, or within a dollar or 2 per box.
 
Two of my buddies have WSM's one in 270 & the other in 7mm I have shot both of their rifles and all of their different loads I have always been amazed at how accurate these rifle/cartridge combo's are.

Myself I do not have a use for WSM's I like the 280 Rem/30-06 size cartridges for everyday hunting I then jump up to the true performers 300 & 375 Rem Ultra Mag's when real performance work needs to be done.
