I'm going to try hunting yotes this year for the first time and have some bullet questions. I'm shooting a .223 . I have already developed a sweet load for 70gr Bereger VLD for target shooting and I'm in the prosess of loading some hornady 60gr soft points. Which bullet should I try using that would cause the least damage to the pelt. Or whats a good bullet for a .223 1-9 twist on yotes?

Thanks

Most guys in this area that are shooting the .223 on coyotes are using Sierra 55 gr GameKings. They shoot well and hit like a hammer.

A coyote pelt is practically worthless this year. If you have a good 70gr load worked up for your 223 shoot them in the boiler room with it and they will die. If you want to spend some quality time in the reloading room a 55gr SPSX at about 3200fps is also a good choice.

Last year I shoot a Yote with my 700 in .223 loaded with a 70gr. Barnes TSX, zipped right through it like a FMJ. Didn't expand at all. I was also at about 30 ft. after a 300 yard blood trail I found it. Just a warning these are very light skinned animals and a fast hard to expand bullet isn't very disireable. Get a light rapid expanding bullet, a lighter bullet will fly flatter but will not buck the wind as easy.

Hard choice I am working Loads up right now. I am trying 52 hp bt hornady's, and 55 or 60 gr. V-max.

I have used the 52gr SMK's with good results (out of a 1-14 22-250). They penetrate and then grenade without usually leaving an exit wound. Shot one smaller female straight through the breast plate at 100 yds. She was dead before she hit the ground. I also pulled of a Hail Marry at around 300 yards while the coyote was at half run. I broad sided him and he dropped like a sack of hammers. I would think the vld’s would do much the same.

Did you open up the chest cavity, or are you assuming it didn't expand based on the exit hole size?

i use the sierra 40hp .loaded up in my 22-250.these actually work very well.have shot coyotes with these at close to far range.bullet does not exit them .drops em right now.

Favourite 'yote bullet in my .222 is at 40 grain Ballistic Tip -- have shot quite a few, and have found the bullet to be a very consistent performer with minimal pelt damage -- usually just a .22 caliber entrance hole.

Have had similar results shooting a 50 grain BT out of my .22-250 -- a long string of one-shot kills both close and far.

I'm using in my .223 1/9 twist. the Nosler b-tip 40g. they are realy accurate up to 300m, fast ( +-3500fps). the 2 yotes I've shot this year died before touching the ground......

if you are hunting in farmland area it is not a good idea to use non expending bullet like VLD's. cause you can have a ricochet........ fast expending bullet are a lot safer and better killer!!!!!

I would assume it didn't expand, as well, if the coyote travelled 300 yd after a hit through the chest.

All I use any longer are 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips started out at 3900 fps from my 223 Ackley...........................coyotes don't move five feet. :)

:D But it`s fun seeing them go POOF like a gopher....lol
It`s actually quite cool with the Texas heart shot:D

As for using VLD`s etc, Out here on the baldass prairie you don`t need to worry so much about ricochet when there`s nobody for miles and miles. You just watch where you shoot and use the basic know your backstop etc.

Closer to towns and cities you be more apt to use something like Varmint Gernades or V-Max etc
