Does anybody know what it takes to reclassify AR-15s as non-restricted? Obviously, the shorter barreled AR-15s would still be restricted unless the federal government changes the classification of restricted rifles, but what about longer barreled AR-15s? A 20in barreled AR-15 fits in the classification of non-restricted so why is it restricted? Can the feds changed that without having to introduce a bill to do so?

AR-15 is the only rifle named restricted by "name." To change this you would need a majority of Canadians who want AR-15's to be non restricted (that is what? like 17million people?) so the government would be confident to re write the law with out some sort of political fall out.

Ar15

Many companies make pump action AR15's for export. Canada has them as restricted, so your chances are less than zero. It would take a total change in government and thinking. Both of which will never happen.

It's restricted because it's a non-sporting nasty black rifle and those who look upon their awesome mass killing might are forever twisted. :O

Be lovely if they were non restricted. Many of the hunting arms of the future are probably going to AR-15 or other black rifle based and we just aren't going to be able to use a lots of them in Canada.

I know people who hunt all sorts of things with AR derivatives, so I don't see how that blasted "non-sporting" thing could ever stand up in court.

AR-15 non restricted.. won't happen

If your looking for something " like " an AR ( in terms of appearance ) I suggest getting a Beretta CX4 Storm ( available in 9mm and .40 in Canada ) Its restricted by barrel length, however add another $600-$750 for a new longer barell and you'll end up with a non restricted firearm with 10 round magazines.

Ive shot the restricted version and its a very comfortable gun to shoot, and 9mm being around $16/box doesn't hurt the wallet either.:dancingbanana:

Nice firearm FMP, never seen a thing like it. In any case, i was thinking of getting a FAL FN until i was told it is prohibited in Canada, so maybe i go with one of these!

The easiest way to do it would be to begin a process to 'define' firearms that fall into the restricted catagory and re-evaluate based on those 'rules'.

If we were writing the definition i don't doubt many rifles would 'pop out' of the restricted class.

Even if we just kept it to 'semi autos with a barrel length of less than 16 inches and previously converted full autos', and did away with all the 'specific' prohibs, we'd be laughing compared to where we are now :)

I wouldn't mind seeing a 'definition' of a 'pistol' either. Something like " designed such that once loaded it can be effectively operated with one hand until the ammo is depleted - AND with a barrel length of less than 12 inches". That would de-classify long barreled contender pistols, and it would make ultra-short shottie 'pistols' legal (pump requires two hands to operate).

Obviously striking the 'restricted' class altogether would be better - but that's probably unachievable in the near future. This would significantly improve our situation.

Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't the AR15's and any derivatives at the time specially classified under an order in council? If this is the case, couldn't a majority PC party theoretically reverse this or am I just dreaming...I'd love to have one for coyote hunting.

Unrestricted AR15

I remeber a time when the AR was unrestricted casue i had one in 1988. The real Mcoy has been restricted since 1978, and thats a bad cause there fun to shoot:ar15:

The Remington 7615 is a non-restricted, pump action, AR/LAR mag fed rifle. Okay, so it has none of the look or feel of a AR, but at least it'll take the 5 and 10 rd mags, and does have a few AR-type accessories for it.
