Wsm???

The Winchester Short Magnums (WSM) were developed to sell more rifles and it obviously worked very well. So did Remington's RUM series. More sales are good for all gun enthusiasts  Now get out there and burn up some powder and support the rest of the industry. And upgrade your scope too while your at it ;)

Actually, it stands for "Winchester Short Magnum" :p:kickInTheNuts:

WRONG!!

If you shoot 180's out of either a 300WM or 300WSM they are so close in velocity its not giving one the significant advantage over the other. So the advantage would then be the shorter action of the 300WSM, which in my opinion is inconsequential. Get whichever you prefer, but when I bought I went to 300WM because I know it is here to stay, and at the time I couldnt' say that for the short mag.

^my reasoning as well.

also for those that dont reload the advantage of a slightly shorter action is balanced by the disadvantage of huge price differences in entry level factory ammunition. two quick examples from LeBaron:
-Remington Core-Lokt 150gr are $26 a box for .300WM and $43 a box for .300WSM.
-Winchester Super-X 150/180gr Powerpoints are $25 a box for .300WM and $35 a box for .300WM.
-most premium ammo costs the same for either.

the RUM series was designed to make Remington billions of dollars in profit from $100/box factory ammunition sales :D

Good business plan but did it work? Virtually all the RUM shooters I personally know are handloaders too. If one is an advanced enough shooter who can utilize the additional range provided by the super magnums, that person likely "rolls their own" and giggles at folks who buy one then snivel because factory ammo is expensive and it kicks so much

I roll my own for a 300RUM and 2 375RUM's and I never buy factory loads unless it was an extremely good deal off of the EE or they came with the rifle I bought.

Nothing magical but I own a 270WSM and a 300WSM. For me it was something a little different and I find the ammo cost difference minimal as I only hunt with these guns and maybe go through 2-3 boxes per year. I do my paper punching with my .223.

Two years ago there were two men at the range, reloading and shooting 300 WSM's.
One said he was finished when his velocity hit 3080 fps and he had a one inch group at 200 metres. Both had bought Remington 700's in 300 WM, and rebarrelled to 300 WSM.
They wanted to use the 300 WSM but wanted to be able to seat the bullets out further. It appeared to work for them. So much for the weight reduction.

I have had both 270 wcf and 270 wsm,I still have the 270 wsm.I like it alot,I gain 150-200 fps with 140 gr bullets and is very accurate. It is a great caliber.
Just my toughts.

I have owned a 270 WSM and 3 300 WSM's, two Kimbers and 2 Model 70's. They all were very accurate with the exception of the one I miss the most. It was a Model 70 stainless Featherrweight. Shot 1-1.5" with 168 TSX's and it killed a great mulie at 444yds and a moose at 200yds that died 100yds uphill from an access road (the best moose:)).
Would I own another one? Yep, I'd buy that featherweight back from whomever bought it from Sol.
If I was to buy another WSM it would be a 325. I don't see any benefit to go 300 WM over 300 WSM or vise versa.

I've got a .270 wsm and it's a great caliber. A couple hundred extra fps, but for what I shoot it really doesn't make much of a difference. There's nothing wrong with the performance of the caliber, but there are a lot of convenience issues that older calibers do better.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have gone with another caliber. I could have had cheaper factory ammo, more bullet selection, better availability in more locations, and even more reloading data. I really love my rifle, but even my 30.06 mountain rifle will hold one more round then my WSM.

Oh well, I could always use an excuse to buy another rifle in another caliber.

I have a couple WSM's I like them. They are not the be all or end all but its nice to have a short action that has all the perks of a large action mag. Just my 2 cents on them

If I was looking at buying a 30 cal. magnum I would probably get the 300 WSM but I could't see buying one to replace a 300 WM. But then again I shoot a 338 RUM.
