Hey guys,

I am looking for a .22 double action revolver to add to my range case. I am not familiar with the .22 revolvers out there so I am looking for some input.

Please suggest some .22 LR make and model options for me to look into.

Thanks
Cactus

If you ever find a Colt Diamondback for a decent price grab it. They were the finest .38 and .22 revolvers ever made.

No matter what make/model you decide on make sure it's double action as ejecting .22 in a single action are a PIA in my opinion.

I have a Diamondback as well as a Smith model 17.The Diamondback is a beautiful firearm, but my model 17 will out shoot it any time.Diamondbacks dont have a great reputation for accuracy. The model 17 is "the" classic 22 revolver. Its also much easier to get parts and to find gunsmiths to work on Smith and Wessons as compared to Colts. For those reasons,my model 17 gets about 10X the amount of range time than my Diamondback does.As for finding a "good deal" on Diamondbacks regarding whats happened to prices of second hand Colt revolvers, well good luck!

Mention should be made of the Colt officers match which is(was) evidently a fantastic 22 DA.These will probably be even harder to find than Diamondbacks.

The Colt officers Model Match in 22 will outshoot every Diamondback I own (I have three). My 6 inch Diamondback is close, but the OMM still groups better. My S&W 17 is about equal to the 6" Diamondback, but a better shooter then my 4" Diamondback. I also have a couple of Colt Trooper Mk III revolvers in 22 that shoot quite well, about equal to the 17. Considering what a Colt will cost you, you are better off with a S&W. The best shooting 22 revolver I ever had (and should not have traded away) was a Dan Wesson. - dan

I have shot them all, and cant find any difference in accuracy, accuracy is dependant on the ability of the user. The smoothness of the action, and timing of the cylinders are important, the S&W has a slight edge in trigger pull. otherwise the Diamondback was the nicest revolver I ever used.

Depends on price range. The above are quite nice but more than I wanted to pay for a plinker.
If you want cheap, I got this High Standard Sentinel for $170.

Double action is poor but workable, very heavy.
Single is not bad. It is plinking accurate. Consistently hit 8x10 steel plates at 25m. Be better with better sights.
Grips are small but great for children.
I bring it with me to the range almost every time. Good bang for the buck.

Colt Diamondbacks are beautiful revolvers. Well made and downright gorgeous bluing but they are really fussy when it comes to ammo and lose accuracy quickly if they are not cleaned after 50-100 rounds, at least that how it was with the one I owned. If you are have a few other .22lr revolvers I wouldn't hesitate in recommending one as they will definitely appreciate in value but if you want it as a principle 'shooter' then I'd say get a S&W Model 17 or 617.

Dinsdale High Standard has been making some great double nine revolvers for many years! I'll take a High Standard sentinal over any Smith (six shot),as far as light weight and river bank ready(meaning I don't have to worry about the great blued finnish)or sweat of it in my belt!

Every gun has it's place and High Standard has been there and done that!

I did have a S&W 18-2 it was nice to look at ,just not the shooter you would stick in your waistband and head into the river with!

:) See if You can find a nice PRE-LOCK:mad:S&W . I have the 10 shot Mdl. 617 in a 4", but I understand the 4" is not an option up North. I have a friend with a 6", & it is also great. Probably my favorite walkaround gun for the woods, ever.

damn you and your Canadian Prohibited goodness... I'm gonna go cry now... hey, can we get enough peoples on here to all sign a petition to Smith & Wesson to get them to follow Ruger and make their 4" barreled wheelguns 4.2"? I like the thought of a 4.2" stainless 10 shot .22lr revolver :D
