Marmots in BC

Last summer at my uncle's cabin in the interior of BC (not sure if it's considered Thompson/Nicola or South Cariboo,) I noticed a problem. At least one marmot had taken up residence under the cabin.

At first I had no problem with this as I like marmots and enjoy seeing any kind of animals around the place. Then I noticed that they were doing a fair bit of digging under the cabin, ripping out alot of insulation, sh!tting on our wood piles, etc.

My uncle wants me to off them this year. I don't have a hunting license and really never planned to get one, but I do have my PAL and will soon have a couple firearms.

Does anyone know if it is legal to shoot marmots on your property in that area without a hunting license?

Live trap em maybe? I bet they're like skunks in that you can get them to leave with moth balls, smoke and loud music, then seal up their entrances, otherwise you'll just end up with more critters. We caught a fisher that was living in the wall by putting some heavy nylon netting (badminton netting) loosely over his entrance then running chainsaw exhaust into the other end of his den. He came rocketting out and was stuffed into a sack and wrapped up for transport.

I actually wanted to catch/reclocate but them things are pretty crafty.

I rented a live-trap for a month when I was staying there last summer. Tried all kinds of bait and never caught anything.

Even tried getting him with a little snare rig a bunch of times when he popped out, just like we used to do with the ground squirrels at Roche Lake as kids.
 
Let me know where the cabin is and I'll have a ummm friend yeah that right a friend come in and clear them out for you... ;)

Be careful... A buddy of mine tried this with a groundhog &... well... let's just say that he never thought that a groundhog would ATTACK!!!

It's a funny story to hear him tell.

Had a buddy with a farmhouse on 100 acres of hayfield around the Uxbridge area. A local earthpig moved in under the house and his wife/bedroom/sheets were infested with lice. It's a 100 year old farmhouse and the next thing to a dirt floor....

So he 'commissioned' me to rid of the earthpig. Shooting in CQB manner could not and would not work, so that was out of the question. :(

We tried duct taping our vacuum cleaner hoses and Honda Civic exhaust, then running the hoses down his hole under the house. Idled the car for a little while. No positive results... he was still causing havoc.

Then we tried the smoke bombs (Farmer's Supply or TSC Stores) and that only caused my wife's asthma to get worse. Obviously did not work to smoke out Osama Bin Laden either from the Tora Bora Caves. :confused:

One afternoon while heading out on a grocery errand, my wife backed the Honda Civic over the groundhog.... problem solved :evil: My wife is a killer ! :eek:

This is bad karma for Mrs. Hungry. The fleas and spirit of the groundhog will find her eventually. She needs to do something to rebalance the chi. Maybe, kill all the other groundhogs before they can identify her and plot their revenge?

Tried mothballs yet?

Supposed to keep the skunks from homesteading under thn to whatever you can gete cabin, may work for the earthpigs.

Another possibility is a radio, tuned in to whatever you can get, just to keep the 'peace and quiet' gone. May motivate the rat to go elsewhere.

I suspect your going to have a hard time getting rid of that marmot with out killing it.... If you can find another one you may be able to get some slippers?
 
I am damn near positive folks that marmots are protected in BC...Reason I say this is that the Kamloops cemetary is OVERRUN with them, and their tunnels, but they aren't able to destroy them because they are protected. Let me double check for the law on that, but you might have to go with the live option as your only choice.

The marmot is an endangered species and is found mostly in the high alpine meadows above 1000 metres on Vancouver Island, mostly living in colonies

So the only question remaining is...is it really a marmot or something else commonly referred to as a marmot? Cause if it's a marmot and it is an endangered species, you can't even glance at em with a nasty look without the greenies wanting to give you a colonoscopy.

Sorry but you have the wrong marmot! The vancouver island marmot is endangered (so few they have an exact count of every survivor) but the mainland BC marmot is not. I can't find the section in the regs, but I have seen people kill them to protect private property so it *should* be legal. (Ha! I almost used the word 'must' :D ).
 
They are probably Columbia Ground Squirrels. They look the same and are commonly confused with marmots. You can kill all you want of CGS as long as it is on private land and you have the owners permission.
Plink away.
