Does anyone know the shank diameter and thread pitch for these rifles? Do the .300 Wby versions use the same bolt length as the regular magnums with a different magazine box?

Thanks.

The barrel to receiver thread is metric..26mm x 1.5mm pitch.

A long action Howa mag box is about 3.6"..IIRC....the 300 Weatherby uses the same action and mag box as the 7 Mag and 300 Win Mag.

If it uses the same action what is the maximum allowable C.O.A.L length allowed and will still function out of the magazine.

If you have to seat longer bullets deeper you will be robbed of case capacity and thus the 300 Weatherby will have no advantage over the 300 Win Mag.

Well you'd think it would have to feed the SAAMI maximum overall length .300 Wby., but then again I don't know.

3.6 OAL for mag box would limit you on your OAL if your shooting heavier or high B.C bullets would it not?

The only reason why I ask is because I was thinking of using the same action for a 7mm STW build....as long as you can seat the bullets close to the lands and still have the cartridge function out of the magazine.

True, but if it did have a 3.6" mag box it would not hold factory ammo...

someone must have a long action Howa to measure for us.

If it's less than 3.6, kinda makes ya wonder how the Model 70 was chambered in full length H&H rounds for years.......the Model 70 is 3.6"

OK - I had a brain fart - 2.85" for case length and for some reason my feeble mind was hung up on the "85" and I was thinking 3.85" OAL instead of the correct 3.60".

Sorry about that and thanks for the info, I appreciate the help.

Unless I am missing something... but for the 7mm STW(which is basically same length as 300 Wthy) that 3.6 would be a little short if one was shooting a high B.C bullet like an A-Max or Berger?

I can forsee 2 problems.

Not being able to get close enough to the lands and losing case capacity.

Is there any other long actions better suited to full length cases like 7mm STW or .300 Wthy.?

I had two 7 STW's in Rem 700's...can't touch the lands and fit the box..even with the Remington's 3.7" box...IIRC I ended up about .10" off the lands with a 160 Accubond.
I don't think there are any regular production bolt actions with magazines longer than the 700...unless it's a CZ in 416 Rigby......or some other large Mauser style for a big African cartridge...

.100 off the lands is quite a distance.

I usually shoot Accubonds about .020 off the lands.

Some guys that target shoot Bergers sometimes start the bullets off touching the lands or slightly engaging the lands. I guess these guys MUST be single loading these rounds?

Weatherby MUST make a longer style action for their 30-378 or 338-378 cartridges?

The box on my Mark V .300 is 3.720". The box on my CZ .416 is 3.920". You could consider a reamer with a separate throater for the STW, or one of extended mag boxes for the Rem 700.

I think I will stick with regular length round like 7mm Rem Mag.

Might be a very sound choice. I'm migrateing back to standard length cartridges in magnum length actions myself, as shown by rebarrelling a .300 Mark V in .300 Win Mag. It won't stop the lands from moving, but at least I can chase them for awhile.
I like the STW, but barrels are a passing aquaintance.
