I started shooting IPSC not long time ago and from the beginning I wanted to know my progress and compare my performance with other shooters. Unfortunately, the present system of publishing match scores, such as zip archives of WinMSS reports, doesn't help much with tracking results over time or compare performance of multiple shooters.

So, I created http://ipsc-stats.appspot.com/ web site. I hope this will be useful to the IPSC shooters. It aggregates results of IPSC matches and allow to slice and dice them in various ways. Currently there is over 100 Ontario matches from 2009 and 2010 loaded into a system, as well as some videos from IPSC matches. Fetching match results is automated, but I only had access to results for Ontario matches and few matches held in Quebec, MB and NS.

You can login into the system using IPSC Canada, IPSC Ontario or IPSC NB user and password or send me PM if you don't have either of those.

do you have only Ontario results ?

Unfortunately at the moment, yes.

If someone tell me where to get the other results I can look at getting them into the system. Currently it can automatically suck in results published on a page as bunch of links to zip archives with two WinMSS report files (overall and per-stage results), either txt or pdf. But it won't be hard to add loading results in other formats if there is any interest.

Didn't a member here already do something similar to this? Although I don't know if it has been kept up to date. There is not a lot of info on the site as to logging in - IPSC Canada password doesn't seem to work.

Indeed. I had a chance to look at that one and I've been told that it haven't been updated for some time because there wasn't enough interest.

For those who used the old site, here is a few things to compare:

* automatic downloading of txt and pdf results
* automatic handling of different spelling of competitor names
* results are represented is very close to the reports we all got used so see
* new features you haven't ever seen before
** historical overall and per-stage results for one or multiple competitors (to track performance over time)
** comparison of the match results for multiple competitors side by side

I am still looking for new ways to use available data. So, feedback is very welcomed.

I used to do it on the tanfo11.com site, but there were a few "quirks" that made it a pain in the ass to keep up to date..

1) name differences.. (spellings from different MD's.. ) pattern matching only goes so far.
2) some MD's are using old versions of winmss, and the output are slightly different (so some manual corrections where needed when they where encountered)
3) while Ont board liked it, I got the feeling that some didn't like the fact that I was duplicating an official "source" of scores.

Thanks for the clarification. I hope I got around of those issues.

1) name differences.. (spellings from different MD's.. ) pattern matching only goes so far.

I maintain dictionary of the known spellings. It is a semi-automatic process. So, names in the new matches are renamed according to dictionary. But new spellings can be corrected later, and all existing matches with those spellings will be corrected. Seem to work ok, because percentage of names that gets spelled differently is relative small.

2) some MD's are using old versions of winmss, and the output are slightly different (so some manual corrections where needed when they where encountered)

This one doesn't seem to be an issue any more. At least I've been able to import all Ontario results for 2009 except one which was in an rtf format.

3) while Ont board liked it, I got the feeling that some didn't like the fact that I was duplicating an official "source" of scores.

I didn't do it to make it an official source, but to make possible things that official sources just cannot do, such as seeing history of results for given competitor, or comparing results of several competitors, or looking at the match results for all divisions combined or prod+standard divisions combined.

BTW, at the moment you can't get any 2009 results from the "official source". So, maybe it is not such a bad thing to have an alternative location. :D

Anyways, so far I only got positive feedback and few suggestions I am going to add in a near future.

I had the same thing.. but it still requires updates every now and then..
I didn't do it to make it an official source,

but that's one of the problems.. have you protected the results from general viewing?? IPSC ontario protects the results for the privacy of the members, and you will be required to do the same. (that was why I used the same userid and password as IPSC ontario so members didn't need to have a personal one)

It doesn't seem a big deal. Also, it only need to be fixed for the people who actually interested in their results and that reduces number of names to be fixed.

Yes, the site requires auth. If it will grow in popularity, I can look at using the same userid and password as for Ontario web site or use something similar to omen's system which requires to create account and uses section password for that.

There is a big difference between the creation of a system like this and the management.. just wait until you get 15 people emailing you saying "how come my results don't show up" or.. "can you change me name" or "How come the match results are not posted on the IPSC Ontario web site yet.".. the list goes on.

it's fairly easy to create something like this (as I have done in the past) but it does require regular management (which is more time consuming when you also have a full time job, and are involved with other things..)

Hey, stop whining already. You are dragging all the fun out of this.

I'm not whining.. I'm giving you the reality of the situation, and it's not always as "easy" as people make it out to be.. I do this type of thing on a daily basis for work, and it's not a simple task.

People don't appreciate the effort that goes into system like these.. (but they do feel free to ##### and complain about them ;) )

It a people nature to complain about things and often there is some truth out there. But it is free to use and I will figure out how to deal with complexity and other issues when they will arise.

If you want to help, you can provide feedback about the system and not about issues that are not there yet. :D

read the 3 items I posted about.. while you posted partial ideas for solutions, they are still problems and DO exist.

I already thanked you for that one. I also appreciate your concerns about my time. :D

Those not just ideas, this stuff is already working. Maybe they are problems, but for the scope of this web site the stuff works pretty well from what I can see here. I think that sucking in hundred matches in one click is quite impressive. Even so I had to fix few competitor names after, it didn't take much of my time.

Anyways, despite your effort to de-motivate me, I am planning to maintain this system, at least for my own use. If other people find it useful, maybe they thank me some day.

so you accuse me of whinning, pointing out problems that don't exist and de-motivating you.

its obvious that you think im trying to sabotage your work or something.

you asked for input and I gave it to you. sorry im just pointing out the reality and not like everyon else who just seems to parise you. I even gave you access to see the site I did to try and help you.

I couldn't care less at this point.
Good luck on your site and don't feel upset if people aren't throwing thanks you way when you are done.
