Help me pimp my 1911A1C Norinco? (pic)

OK guys
This will be my go to pistol and I want her to look good and shoot reliably. I'm a traditionalist at heart so I'm not looking for anything radical.

What are the fundamental modifications I ought to take make?

She will be receiving the Armco treatment right off the bat. I'm hoping for a 3lb trigger. I will be dehorning her and removing the made in China and Norinco emblems myself and then parking her because this is what I have available (Thank you Radocy).

But sites and grips? Other?

Sites?
I like no snag combat sites - love the fibre optics sites but don't know what brand I should go to. No experience with commander length pistols.

Grips?
Pictures would sure help me

Should I go to a full length guide rod? Does it really make a big difference?
Anything else I need to pay attention to?

I can tear these down in the dark and reassemble them but I don't know a darn thing about the best mods for these.

What do you suggest?

Sights for sure. Norinco ones are crap.

How's the trigger? I've seen some Nork's with very good OOB triggers, your's may or not need work.

I always had full length guide rods on my 1911's but I'm not sure you really need them.
 
Everything I've read in "The Complete 1911 Magazine" I picked up, they were saying for the guide rod:

"For reliability stick with the standard spring and plunger, for accuracy use a full length guide rod" slightly paraphrased since I cannot find the exact quote right at this time @.@
 
Hi RC,

I'd say to try some Hogue rubber panels for grips...they're inexpensive and excellent.

Having built a couple of 1911's I am inclined to forego the full length guide rod...it doesn't seem to make a difference in reliability and makes takedown more troublesome. Also, you can't "pinch check"...:rolleyes:

I would look for low profile, snag resistant fixed sights - as the rear will be windage adjustable only.

i ordered the Truglo TFO (fiber+tritium) sights for my glock and really like them, thinking of ordering a set for my STI Ranger2... take a look at them...
 
I would extend the beavertail another three inches back. A full length guide rod will improve accuracy over 300%. I would stick with snagging sights as opposed to non-snagging ones. Just in case you need to snag something!

Love the grips, trigger, sites, lowered ejection port & ambi-safety [being a lefty]. Not big on the radical beavertail or bob-tail. Overall that is one sweet commander, though. :cool:

Norc commander

All I did to mine so far is install and adjustable aluminum trigger & new grips with hex screws. Shot so well right outta the box that I don't want to do anything further with it in the short term. I can live with the little nibby factory sites for the moment but likely some low-profile better vis ones is on the radar for the future. Likely will go to Armco for the install, so might as well get it tuned then, too. Norc hit it right this time around with these, though...

You can do a great job on the cheap. change the sights. abi-dex safety, use a standard 1911a1 grip safety and mill a slot in it for the round hammer of the commander. Good to start and shot it. Then you will see what else would work.

:agree: I am a big fan of beavertail grip safeties, as well as a decent set of sights, although I think the slanted low mount sights are overdone. I really like this one from heirloom precision, I have been trying to replicate the grip safety, but just can't seem to get it right. Can't seem to find someone who sells one either.

Generally, I prefer slim double-diamond panels in black micarta.

You're giving me some ideas here.

I think I'll avoid the full length guide rod.
Love the idea of a really dark finish with ebony grips.
Perhaps I should use the phosphate finish as primer and then finish with matte black duracoat and ebony grips.
Not sure about lowering the ejection port - depends on cost I guess
Think I'll stick with the stock trigger for now
Heine Combat sites? I like them - I assume more affordable than novak by a long shot
 
I put the Heinie slant pro sights on my girlfriend's Glock and they are awesome. I later changed the front sight to a Dawson fibre-optic. Even better.:)
 
If the pistol is getting an Armco tune, you'll love the trigger, mine's 3.5 Lbs and very clean. It'll feed almost anything too. As far as the ejection port lowering goes, mine isn't lowered and I have no issues with my brass. I agree on the guide rod it's not necessary, and can get in the way. I was really surprised at how these pistols perform with just a few touches, certainly out of proportion to their cost.
