Boresnake?

I only use them for my rimfires. I use foaming bore cleaner, flush out with Hoppes 9, and a couple pulls of the boresnake. I always clean them after each use with soap and water.
With centerfire I use a dewey coated rod, chamber guide, brass jags, and phos bronze brushes.

Cleaning Products:
I have had great success with Hoppes #9 as a powder solvent, Sweets 7.62 and/or Industrial Ammonia as a copper remover.

if you use a boresnake on any rifle I build forget the warranty, it is null and void with the use of 1.
I guess that tells you what I think.
I think that dragging a dirty gritty piece of rope with who knows what embedded into turns off most precision shooters.
BUT..........if you drive a compact car and have a gun with a 30" barrel, a boresnake may come in handy to tie down the trunk lid or hatchback as you drive to the range.

That pretty neatly summs it up.
That and the fact that hey have been known to break inside the bore, and they are usually impossible to get out once well jammed in place.
I think they are great for business, we see a few every year that result in the need to rebarrel the rifle as when they do break most guys won't quit and seek professional help until it is toooo late.

so i am a complete noob on the whole boresnake thing,but it was reccomended to me by a certain gun shop. so if you clean them are they still bad ??? and is it just the fact that the "DIRT" is being pulled through the barrel??
Did that certain gun shop happen to sell boresnakes or did they tell you where you should go to buy one

Was it a "clerk" at a firearms retailer? Or someone who actually had some knowledge about building precision rifles?
Even when they are absolutely new and clean there can be damage done to crowns and throats, not to mention getting it stuck, but yes once they are contaminated the real issues are compounded.
Bore snakes have their place, if you out sloshing through the mud and need something in an emergency to pull through the barrel to keep it half safe to shoot then by all means pull it through (not for multiple uses) but for all other cleaning usually done at home there are far better alternatives, which have been covered here. Everything has its place.
I clean my 10/22 from the crown with a muzzle guard and a slow patient hand. I have a Green Mountain barrel and it is an exceptional shooter, I hope to keep it that way.
