In the Jan 06 2010 issue of the Eganville Leader.
Julie and Basil Herron, both of whom grew up near Bark Lake near Barry’s Bay, spending many winters there fishing, were attacked by a lone wolf December 31 on their first ice fishing trip of the season. Alone on the lake and hearing the shrill song of a wolf pack waiting in the woods, Mr. Herron used his four-foot-long ice chisel to keep the wolf at bay in a terrifying 10 to 15-minute standoff of gnashing teeth and incessant lunging for his throat. Mrs. Herron, wracked with fear could only watch and keep the family pooch, Lassie, clutched close to her chest awaiting her husband’s -- or the wolf’s -- fate. Fortunately, all parties left the scene unscathed, but the Herrons warn people to be very aware of their surroundings while recreating this winter.
