I'm currently modifying an upper with a standard FSB to one with a longer FF rail handguard that is going over the gas block. So the FSB had to be shaved. Well, it's not so hard to do it yourself. It takes a dremel and some patience...

not after you have taken the pins out. :)

Well, because once the FSB is indexed, drifting out the pins is easier than struggling with setscrews which can be stripped. Supposedly, the setscrews need to be loctited in red.

Screw-on gas block is a second best solution because there is not a jig available to pin it.

I used a Larue low profile gas block, dimpled the barrel for the lock tighted set screws and then drilled it for a pin. Hasn't had a stoppage in about 3000 rounds.
That being said, I did take a a bench grinder to one of my sight towers to fit a Larue rail.

I'll be leaving the FSB on my SRB when I do the surgery. I'd rather take a little extra time cutting and cleaning and not worry about taking it off and re-installing.

great job!! goes even faster with an angle grinder :)

Ya, I thought of it, but since it was my first time, I wanted to go safe and use a small power tool.

Nice Job, look good

Did you just repaint the part?

Thank you to share

Yes, I just put 3 light coats of Krylon. (it's the only paint I had in hand...)

why would you do that when you have buy a lowprofile gas block for $45 from Troy Ind.
bbb

Because the FSB was already pinned on a barrel (see pic) and it's the most secure installation.

I've chopped an fsb as well without removing it from the upper. No big deal at all, takes 15 minutes.

I always take the FSB off first, that takes me 2 minutes max, and grinding off the handguard cap without removing the fsb slows the process greatly and increases the chance of dinging your barrel.

Once off, I mount it in a vice, and have at er with the angle grinder, final cleanup with the dremel.

Nice work Zykopat, always satisfying to mod your own gun.

Thanks Walt, I tried to do as good as you did for my 2 Stag setups with shaved FSBs.

Do you just reuse the pins ater there punched out?

Yep, the only thing special about the pins is that they're tapered. Punch them on the small end and when ready to secure the gas block, insert them small side in and punch on the big end. The Brownells front sight bench block is real handy for this kind of work, but not an absolute must.
