I just acquired a Model 58, 28" barrel and full choke. About an inch and a half from the muzzle, it quickly tapers out to a larger OD. It seems to be uniform around the circumference of the barrel. Opinions? Bulged or built like that?

What does the inside of the barrel look like in that area? Does it taper out as well?

I just went and had a look, and yes it does. From inside it looks like someone may have pressed a die into the barrel to open up the choke, rather than boring it out. The taper is too well defined to be accidental.Has anyone heard of this, or is that totally Bubba?

hmmm!!!

I have heard of older shotgun barrels that were full choked shooting heavy steel loads basically choking themselves (expanding or bulging the end of the barrel) and it basically pushes the choke outward and has that swelled look to it ! The older full choked shotguns were never meant to fire steel loads ! This is a slow process can look kind of meant to be there! Until it get big enough you say what the heck is that!
Not saying this is the case in this shotgun, but!!!!
cheers

Yes, the barrel is bulged. The plan now is to convert the barrel into a 26" modified choke. One of the owners of a local gun shop is a machinist in his other life and he is going to measure the ID of the barrel to see if he can remove the damaged section and leave me with 26" give or take and a proper modified or improved modified dimension, then re-install the bead. I'm actually pleased with this, since the full choke wasn't really what I want anyway. I was thinking of having it bored out to a modified anyway, and although this is a little more pricey I can live with it.

If it is cut back to 26'' it will be cyl bore have a gunsmith install a sleeve with the choke you desire they work very well.

Thanks. The plan is to take off just as much as is needed to get the proper cylindrical configuration, as long as it doesn't open it up more than modified. If it is going to, he'll call me first, and we'll go from there.
