My Barrel is stamped 28".

It measures 27 1/2" from the receiver to the end of the barrel.
It measures 28 in from the chamber to the end of the barrel.

Which measurement does the CFO use to designate barrel length.

I want to cut it to 18" and want to know if that is 18" from the receiver or 18" from the chamber.

Thanks.

I really think the shotgun barrel length FAQ needs to be stickied to the shotgun forums. And that this measurement info be added to it.

AFAIK the CFO measures it with a rod down the barrel.
with the action closed, you insert a rod down the barrel until it rests against the breech and measure the rod at the muzzle.

The correct answer. The CFC specifies that barrel length is from the face of bolt to the muzzle. I think there is an FAQ section on the CFC site thqt answers this, too.

Is there some damage or defect in the last 10" of your barrel? Mossberg sells accessory barrels for their 500, including a 18.5 inch cylinder bore with plain bead sight. They list if for US $81.58 on their website so it may be not too expensive from a Canadian dealer and you'd have a dual purpose gun.

Sorry I did not mention it was a 20ga in the thread OP. They do not make the 18.5" barrel for the 20 ga gun. They only make 4 barrels for the 20g, a 26" and 3, 24" rifled and smooth bore slug barrels.

This is why I want to cut it, thanks for the info guys that helps me out.
