ok - I feel a little dumb using a thread to ask this but where does one buy a Norinco CQ556?

I did a search and found lots of debate, reviews and fans but couldn't see who actually sells them. I checked out the websites of the usual Norinco merchants - Canada Ammo and Marstar - but couldn't find anything there.

Can anyone help my weak search fu?

Also, what in your opinion is the best bang-for-buck, non-Norinco, off the shelf complete AR deal out there right now?

It's for a friend who's looking at getting into the AR game.

I've tried selling him on the virtues of the EE, but he's been soured on used guns.

He's not particularly picky on the different styles, mostly price point.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

ST

The used w/accessories from Frontier arsm is sold. I bought 1 of 2 new ones left. Lever arms is sold out, as is Mil-Arm in Edmonton. The story I hear from the importer is that Norc recalled the cq 5.56 for a commonly #####ed about paint defect.

Everywhere else other than Frontier is sold out and no idea when the Chinese will begin shipping out the recalled gun with less crappy paint.

That would be nice.. :)

Just got one near Xmas and finish allright on 95% of it. Mags look like hell, safety is worst manufacture I've seen in a long time. Looks like it was buried since Vietnam and just stuck in my gun. WAYYYYYY pitted. Bottom of bolt rough. Still working out kinks. But a hell of a lot of fun for what I paid for it. Got mine from Elwood Epps in ONT.

Not quite, but.... I bought a CQ back in 2001 (I think... maybe earlier?) from a local importer who deals with Norinco...
He told me that the CQ311 was stopped production back in 1988... So, any "new" 311's that come onto the market today are actually at least 22years old.

Believed it to be true seeing as the accessory kit that was stored inside the butt stock of the unit I bought smelled awfully moldy and had deterriorated somewhat.... :D

cq311 and cq5.56 are totally different rifles. 311 is an a1/a2 type rifle and the 5.56 is a carbine flat-top.

311 and cq5.56 ARE NOT THE SAME

CQ 5.56mm Type A assault carbine (M4 clone) variant was introduced in 2006. The original CQ 311 was introduced 1982-83

311s are not made anymore, just reconditioned decades old ones.

The CQ 5.56 M4 is actually a really well made gun, aside from its finish. The metallurgy is identical to American made models. Just get a coat of Duracoat on the gun if you ever get one.

Seriously, just get a cheap lower receiver kit and change out the brutal ambi-safety and trigger group and you've got a M-4 that can run with the best of them. Mine needed to have some weird casting flaws cleaned out of the upper, but after cleaning it a few times most of the spray paint came off leaving the parkerized finish exposed. Really weird why they would spray over a perfectly good finish; particularly with a cheap paint...I certainly cant see them recalling it for that.
