3 rifles-- need input

I am new to the forum, and after many years of kids hockey, and too much work, just call me a newbie. I went on a couple of great hunts this fall and am now hooked,, again. I have an old heavy Ruger, now I want a new light
mid priced rifle in 300 win for mostly elk, and moose, with deer.
I don't mind a bit of recoil.
I am going to buy with removable magazines.

Could realy use some input.
Acuracy, Smooth Action, Tigger, and Stock

--Savage FCSS Weatherwarrior, Accu Stock, and Trigger
--Sako A7
--Thompson/Centre Icon Weather Sheild, Hogue Stock?

I am leaning to the Thompson but can't get much independent info.
 
I have a number of Savages, and a Tikka. My Savages are synthetic, and the Tikka is laminate.

If you are going with synthetic, removable mag, I would buy the Savage and put the savings into your scope. If you are leaning towards a Tikka, I really like the laminated stocks. A bit heavier, but I don't think that's a bad thing in a bigger caliber. My Tikka is a .338WM and it isn't too bad for recoil. I put the Sako rings on it as well, which are a bit heavier than most.
 
i have savages and tikkas and weatherbys,and ruger.
i would go for savages or tikkas.
my savages shoot better than anything i own,my tikka is just sweet to shoot and is really accurate it is in 338wm with wood stock,is really light but a limbsaver fixed the recoil problem.main reason i say savage is because of the interchangable barrels.also the awesome trigger.
like said above what you save on the rifle spend the extra on the scope you wont be dissapointed.
 
The TC icon are very well built rifles accurate good triggers excellent clip system very smooth bolt large bolt body makes for Superior accuracy

Sounds like all 3 are good choices, with Savage at the top.
If I bought the sako a7 I think I would get rid of the aluminum scope mounts.
I would still like to here more about the Thompson.
A good scope will certainly go on the gun, I am thinking 2.5x10
 
Well I went out today and shouldered a bunch including the Savage, Sako, and Thompson, as well as some others. The gun I kept going back to was the
Browning X bolt. I liked the set up with the extra safety, and the action seemed
smooth with low 60 degree bolt lift. Any Pros or Cons would be appreciated.
 
The X Bolt is a great gun, I have no personal experience with it, but a good friend bought one when they first came out and he loves it. Like you said the action is quick to cycle due to the lower bolt throw, and the ergonomics just seem to fit better than most. His is very accurate too, putting my handloads in to about an inch and a quarter at 200 yards on a consistent basis. It is the standard blued/walnut version with a Vortex Viper 3-9X40 on it.

Check out the new Winchester M70 they are decent and well priced. I would go with the sako of the ones you mention, the problem with asking about 3 different makes of rifles is you are going to get opinions on what people are shooting, not very many will have owned all 3 so I suggest you go and see you local gun store and see if you can handle a few different ones and see what feels good.
 
Of the three original choices... Sako would be #1.

I happen to like Brownings, too. So, the X Bolt would be a good choice too if you fancied it as well.

I have the X Bolt in 325wsm awzome gun shot my first 6 by 6 Elk with it this season 279 yard dead on lung heart shot dropped hin in his tracks. Ita very light rifle you can pack it all day in the bush.
 
I guess most guns shoot pretty darn accurate. There are 3 reasons I am asking for imput. First,, most of the light stocks feel cheap to me, (Maybe I need to get over it)
Second,, some of the actions I tried felt very sticky,, Third,, some triggers just didn't feel great. When I started looking I was going to buy a Sako, but I have read that sako is not great to deal with if there are any problems, ( probably just someone who likes to complain). This is like buying golf clubs, too many options. ( want help there, buy Ping
custom fit,, no extra charge, IMHO)
I will certainly trust the imput I hope to get here, much more than the reviews by paid writers. I appreciate the imput.
