I bought a CZ858 a few weeks ago - non-restricted. Only put a few hundred rounds through it and was so thoroughly impressed that when I saw a used restricted model going for $450 at a local gun show - I caved in and got it...

Thing is, this one has CZH Sport stamped on the receiver? Is there anything special about that one? I thought it still has a chrome lined barrel on it doesn't it?

The CZH is not a Ceska Zbrojovka (Wolverine import). It's a Hermex(Marstar import).
The CZH has the chrome barrel. There are other subtle differences but basically its like comparing stag to bushmaster.

The CZH is more collectible in my view, it retains all the original military markings and are no longer being imported. Fit and finish is a bit worse than the the CZ ones, but it is as authentic to the military issued ones as you are going to get.

Well, I would have to respectfully disagree about fit and finish. The finish on my brothers non-restricted CZ started to peel off on the barrel as soon as he took it out of the box. Every time it's handled, another flake falls off. The color on the CZH may not be desired, but it is definitely applied better and has not even scratched and I have handled it three times as much as the CZ.

That's just my opinion. :D

Good job, just don't tell her

She does not need to know;)

Nice purchase at a good price.

Enjoy

That is interesting, the CZ I used to own had a fresh coat of varnish which made it look newer, so I assume in a new state, the CZ one appears better at first glance.

The CZH I have on hand does not chip, it is sitting in its original varnish and has held up fine. Perhaps CZ's new paint of varnish does not hold up to its original military finish afterall. My complaint with the CZH2003 is that it looks old (which it is due to its surplus nature) when compared side by side with a new CZ858.

Another side note, all the "gremlins" I have heard seem to originate from the CZ, but not the CZH.

Her early birthday present to go shooting at the range with you :)
If that doesn't work... well... at least you have nice rifles while they may last in your hands, hehe.
