PGW Coyote 6.5x47 Lapua

I'd stay with the 120 to 130 gr pills for that cartridge. That's what I'd use in it and they seem to group well. Unless you can drive a 140gr @ 2,900fps for 900m I'd rather play with those 130's. You'll need a 260 Ackley, 6.5x55 or 6.5x284 to get up to that speed with safe pressures and good accuracy with 140+ grs.

Is the PGW 6.5x47 Coyote a different chamber than the Lapua 6.5x47?

Have fun. :)

This rifle is chambered in 6.5x47 Lapua. "Coyote" is PGW's name for one style of their short action rifles.

Hey Gunner
Did you have to wait long for you Rifle ?
Scott

Not really that long compared to other rifle projects I have done. The longest part of the project was getting a barrel from krieger which was out of PGW's control. Once they got the 6.5 barrel in, it was put together real quick. If you went with a .30 caliber or .338 caliber which is standard for the coyote and timberwolf, I am sure it would be done really fast. Those are the ones they keep in stock.

Another day at the range. - 6 degrees, wind was 22km/h SSE.

Pushed Reloader 17 up to 40.5 and 41.0 grns with still minimal pressures. Reached 2900 fps with the 123 scenars with a couple groups in the .2's and
.3's. Moving in the right direction. I'll probably be able to get up to 41.8-42.0 grns of Reloader 17 without sacrificing case life. Would love to see it reach 2950 fps.

So how long did it take from when you called to make your order until it arrived at your doorstep?

s.a.w. FWIW we got 2975 av. from 42.5-rl17 and sierra 120's and 2900 from 38.5 Varget and 123 scenars. All hBn coated. Hard to tell pressure with the lapua brass. Primer pockets are still tight. I always try to use about 20 brass over and over when working up loads so pockets should show problems early. Tomorrow will try some with 39 and 39.5 Varget and the 123's. In my rifle the varget seems more accurate than rl17. Mark

Very nice rifle! What barrel length and contour did you choose?

I've been thinking of ordering a 6.5x47 Coyote as well. What do you think would be the minimum effective barrel length with this cartridge? I was thinking of a Coyote set up something Like the Remington XM3 ( http://www.remingtoncustom.com/TargetTactical_xm3.aspx ).
-Mcmillan A1-3 stock
-Short Krieger barrel (20") in a #4 heavy sporter contour.

I know PGW has built 18" 308s ( http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=424627 ).
Obviously a longer barrel would be better for longer shots, but I wonder if a 20" 6.5x47 would be efficient out to 600 meters.

For this rifle about four months. About 2.5 of those months were waiting for a barrel from krieger and then a couple weeks for steve to finish the batch of coyote actions.

That being said, I just ordered a urban ops Coyote in .308 with the 18" barrel that is supposed to be ready within a couple weeks of order date. I think they got a good supply of all the parts to build a coyote at the moment.

That's intersting. The hottest load i made with the R17 is 41.8. Primers still look decent and no sticky bolt when extracting a round. 42.5 grns of r17 must be about overflowing in the case.

I saw one guy on 6mmbr.com try varget with the 120's. It actually was a really decent group but for some reason he left it for R15 and 130 VLD berger's.

The barrel length was a 26" Krieger in a 1 in 8 twist. Not quite sure on the contour, maybe Ross can chime in and give us that info if he has the chance.

I would think a 20" barrel could be effective to 600 metres. I was just talking to them about the urban ops coyote in .308 that i ordered with an 18" barrel and they thought 600 yards would be no problem for me to obtain.

OK went out the afternoon as the wind dropped to 30k. Wolf primer-43 rl17-123 lapua, 10 shots from 3120 to 3147 in 1 hole with a flyer that I prob. caused. But the primers are cratered a bit. I didn't measure the cases for expansion, but with the primers as they are I would think we're a bit over. Didn't have time to try the varget loads. Tomorrow. Rifle is a Rem-Krieger 1-8-varmint contour-HS stock. 10 shots in 5 min, barrel stayed cool. Mark
This batch of bullets was uncoated.
P.S I use an old elecric razor to vibrate/settle powder. Works pretty good.

Edited the last one to 'uncoated' bullets.
Loaded these cases this a.m. Primer pockets are tight. No case head expansion. Loaded 10 with wolf and 10 with fed205m. Will try them this afternoon. If this is real, 3100 from a 26" barrel, this should be a serious long range rifle.
FWIW 43 of rl17 fills the case to the neck jct. only. Mark

Yup. I ran this through JBM Ballisitics, and here's what I got:

For a Lapua 123 Scenar, I used G7 bc = 0.254 (interpolated Litz's data for the Lapua 108 and Lapua 139). Under standard atmospheric conditions, 3100fps muzzle velocity gives 1466fps remaining at 1000yards, 271.0" of drop relative to a 100y zero, and 77.6" of drift in a 10mph crosswind.

That outperforms the very best achievable in a Palma rifle today - a Berger 155.5 Fullbore bullet (currently the lowest drag of all Palma bullets) fired from a 30"-barreled .308 Winchester target at 3000fps m.v., arrives at 1000y doing 1305fps, with 309.8" drop, and 91.0" wind drift.

You'll be shooting about 4MOA flatter than the Palma rifle (though this doesn't really matter), and the Palma rifle's bullets will be blown about 17% further off-course that yours (this *really* matters for long range target shooting!).

If you do want to shoot long range, using one of the 140-class target bullets (139gr Lapua, 142 Sierra, 140 Berger VLD, etc) will likely give you further modest improvements in your long range ballistics over what your 123s are giving you.

In several different loads i've tried, even some recent purchased 130 vld berger's, the sweet spot for this gun is 2880 fps. The reloader 17 takes 40.7 with the 123 scenars. The Reloader 15 takes 38.2 with the 130 VLD Bergers. Running at this velocity I have printed about a dozen groups now in the.2's and .3's. The faster i push them the more the group opens up. 1/2 moa might be worth settling with if i can get another 120 fps out of it. I am also taking the benchrest school of thought and jamming them .010 into the lands. Seems alot better then leaving them .010 off.

Running this load will put me at 27.5 moa at 1000. Fairly close to my old .260AI. Velocity will run at 1547 fps @ 1000 yards which is still decent.
