First Rimfire

Don't rule out the levers, their just ###y!

Rule #1, don't buy a rimfire based on the cheap philosophy. Your going to shoot it more then anything else and you'll probably teach your children to shoot with that same rifle. Make it an investment you'll be proud to hand down one day.

If you want a bolt, the Savage is a good starting point, but if your willing to spend the money their are some beautiful examples you can own if you save for awhile. :)

I'm looking at the Savage Mark II. The reviews are great plus I've even got some PM's on here from people that love it!

My only concern is buying it locally. I'm in Halifax, Nova Scotia and stores that sell firearms seem to be few and far between...

Don't worry about that, stores will ship guns through the mail. I couldn't find a Remington 572 in my area (last month) so I ordered one from Alberta and in 5 business days I had it in my hands.

I bought a 10/22 semi then the 572 pump and now I want a CZ452 Lux bolt.... it'll be a lever after that!:D

I'm loving the mix of semi, bolt, pump and lever action users in here!

I'm getting a good idea of quality, good brands etc. But what should I avoid?

Honestly, must of us probably have at least one of each. Personally I'm missing a pump action .22 from that list.
Within the same price range, bolt rifles usually outperform semi rifles.

Since your in Halifax, I'd recommend checking out the Truro gun show. But that's not till Fall. Pictou show is this spring though. Hopefully you'll have a rifle by then, but it's great fun to go and window shop. I got a safe-queen cooey single shot 12ga there, nothing special but it has proved one of the most useful guns I've bought. Almost bought a plastic magazine Cooey 64 there as well. Kind of wish I did now.

Nangisan what kind of shooting do you plan on doing, plinking or target shooting? Answering that question will lead you towards what type of rifle you are looking for!

You need not be concerned with how to buy, as others have mentioned, most stores will ship all over Canada. I am from NB and have ordered from a few myself.

When you make your decision as to what you are going to buy, I would strongly recommend Frontier Firearms as the place to buy. No, I am not affiliated with Frontier Firearms, I am just a very satisfied customer; excellent customer service and very fast!

Good luck with your purchase! :D

:agree:
I've ordered from Frontier a couple of times and will gladly do it again.

To the OP: Go for the 10/22. Mine has never let me down.:)

For the most part just about any 22 will give you good service. There are some fussy ones like my Cooey 64 but for what I paid its worth the extra effort to clean. Pretty accurate too. Used 22s are cheap and there are a gazillion of them-enough that they have their own Exchange. Lots of used 1022s as well. Buy something used- you should be able to get your money back if you sell it if you take care of it regardless of what it is. Maybe see if there are any members close to you that have more than 1 22 and see if they will take you out to play. Most of us here have at least 3 22s and need nothing better than an excuse to go shooting. Have some fun.

With your lack of experience with firearms and the needs of some of them to be safely tinkered with I would suggest a new or newer savage bolt action with accutrigger. Other than an occasional mag not feeding right it is simple, straight forward, and accurate as heck. Then as you become more comfortable you should move into a 10/22 next.

Buy anything you want to start. It's a .22 so you can have as much fun with it as you want. Then you buy another one in a couple of years, then another . . .

Actually I have none right now. But that is because I sold off my inventory to get an Anschutz 50.18 then changed my mind.
I say get a bolt. A used CIL 180 is an amazing deal and can be found for $250> on the EE.

Then a lever and semi, but bolt first.

It sounds like no-one on the forum only has just one .22 lol

How can anyone have just one??? It like me having an SKS and a CZ858, with surplus ammo you can shoot as much as you like for cheap!!!!! A .22 is so cheap to buy and shoot its just, in my opinion, the only real good starting point for any new shooter. I am 38 years old now and still love my .22's.

I'm so excited about getting my first .22... and my first gun. I really wish I had a cottage though so I wouldn't have to rely on a shooting range completely. We owned a cottage in Ontario but ditched it when we moved out east.

The 10/22 is, by far, the most reliable .22 semi available. If you want a semi, get a 10/22. If you want a bolt or lever, there are a number of options as suggested. There are few semi's other than the 10/22 that don't jam all the time. I have a 10/22 that is now 30 years old and has fired more than 10,000 rds. The only jams I ever had with it was one time in winter when it was all gummed up with those Russian wax coated (waterproof) cheapo .22's. Another time was using those truncated yellow jacket hyper velocity .22 hollow point rds with a crappy plastic Ramline high capacity mag.
