Out of the box Tac driver

I have a remington 700 VTR in 308 that I love, was great right out of the box, with a nice tight chamber. I use Lapua ammo, and it is real good.

for out of the box accuracy on a budget, its hard to beat the Savages.
buying a Savage also has the added benefit of allowing you to pick up a second match quality pre-threaded/chambered barrel from mysticplayer for a very reasonable price, and you can install it yourself with a couple headspace gauges and a Savage barrel wrench. this is what im planning on doing, i have a .308 Savage 16FCSS that i am going to order a heavy .260 barrel for.

or you could buy a Stevens, install a Shilen match heavy barrel from Mysticprecision, for less than the amount youd pay for a Tikka. if you sell your take-off barrel in the EE you could squeeze an aftermarket laminate stock in there too, and once bedded youll end up with something vastly superior.

I agree on the Savage, though if you plan on getting a Stevens plan on installing a Timney or other aftermarket trigger as the Stevens triggers are not the quality I would be trying to shoot out to 500yrds with. A lot of guys, including people that really know precision will also tell you the Tikka T3 Varmint is probably the best you all around you can get out of the box, with absolutely 0 mods. That being said, it is pretty pricy, and for the same dollars you can get a pretty custom Savage that will shoot just as well...Guess it depends on what you want it to look like, and feel like.

just as well? :runaway:
a custom Savage with a match barrel will most likely shoot better. for the price of a T3 varmint you can build on a Stevens action with a match barrel, aftermarket trigger, stock, bolt handle, etc. and you have far more chamberings, twists and barrel lengths to choose from.

or you could just buy something like the Savage 12 LRPV, which will give you a lot more value.
-built on a target action
-target accutrigger
-HS precision stock, not just the same T3 tupperware with some extra plastic pieces on it

Before I opined on which rifle best suits your needs, I would need to know what it is you intend to hunt. There is a world of difference between a 500 yard prairie dog and a 500 yard moose. The prairie dog rifle by necessity would need to shoot half-minute groups to stay on the target at 500 yards, but the moose rifle would only need to stay within 4 MOA to get the job done.

Good Point!

any rifle off the shelf will get it done. a rem 700, tikka, weatherby vangard in 30-06, 300 or 7mm will get the job done.

range finder and turrets will be as important as an accurate rifle. if not more and practice lots of it.

Like Sask said ^ find what you like & fits you. have it bedded and practice shooting it. Get a range finder and shoot at ranges you hunt at. Remember practice is far more important. A coach is also a nice +. AJ

After being quite impressed with the accuracy of the Savage 112 BVSS rifles in 22-250 my daughter and Son In Law have, I decided to get something similar, but something bigger that would reach out a little further. What I ended up with is a 112 BVSS in 25-06 that I put decent glass on, a Leupold VX-III, 6.5-20 long range with Varmint reticle.

:redface:Pardon the homemade 'sticker' target, but it was shot at 185yds, and witnessed by hs4570. I'm more than pleased with the results for the $ value:D.

Ok, here goes.

It's funny how often at the range there;s a guy in the corner trying to figure out why he can't shoot 1moa or better because they've seen it time and time again on the interweb. It takes time, practice, knowledge, and experience! Just because somebody who's been shooting/reloading thousands of rounds a year for years can grab a off the shelf savage and shoot some decent groups (with reloads) and post results here DOESN'T mean a new shooter or tool who repeats a million times what they've heard will be true for them.

Fact is the experienced shooters/reloaders can shoot decent groups with most off the shelf rifles. The reason some pick savage is because the vast options/ease of upgrades, which won't be a huge benifit to the new shooter/tool. Any used rifle, or new rifle on sale will be a good starting point to get experience/go hunting. As for 500yards, try it and see how easy it is :p before hunting season.

That my friend, is simply not even true. Turrets and a range finder are absolutely meaningless without a rifle that can shoot 1/2 MOA (if shooting gophers and the like). If it can't do it, all the fancy lasers and glass in the world won't help you hit the target, and 500 yards is a hell of a long shot to be able to group decently at without an inherently accurate rifle. I wouldn't be trying it too often with a basic 700 nor a Vanguard (unless it's the sub-MOA model) as in my experience, they just don't get it done without a lot of customizing. Remember we're talking about a 2.5" group at 500 yards, not just hitting a 20" gong.

I actually agree with you, was just trying to give the guy options...Frankly, and a lot of people don't like them, but those HB Tikkas will in my experience, shoot 1/2 MOA all day long. That being said I am as we speak working on putting together a new 600yd Savage so we know where I stand, in the end. :)
