Hi, i recently aquired a unfired(can't wait to shoot it) Sako Finnbear Full Stock in 270win.

I Don't currently have any scopes that i think would look even close to right on this rifle.

How about some suggestions on a scope that would compliment the look of the rifle.

Thanks.

Like Tekarra, I have your rifle in 30-06. I put a Leupold 1.5-5x Vari XIII on mine in Sako low ringmounts, (the old windage adjustable mounts with the big serrated thumbscrew). Looks right, handles like a dream, and appropriate scope for a carbine. But yours is a .270, so I may suggest the Leupold 2-7 compact instead. A fullstock rifle looks uber cool with a straight tube scope IMHO.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.I am sort of leaning towards something in the range of the suggested 2x7's.

Does anyone know of the top of their head how comparable magnification Zeiss and leupolds compare weight wise?

I will have to do a little research to check it out.I would like to keep it as light as possible.

Longwalker,
Yes i agree they do look pretty darn sharp with a straight tube.

Tekarra,
I would post photo's but to be honest and sound dumb i have never been able to get that to work for me on here.I don't know what i do wrong but i do something.

I can e-mail pics fine but not post them.

I would go with a gloss 6x36 Leupold. If I remember correctly those rifles weigh close to 8lbs bare, so why are you so concerned about weight?
If money isn't tight opt for a Swarovski 3-9x36 AV.

Got one in 30-06 with an old 3-9 x 40 Leupold Vari-X II on it. AFAIC, that scope works fine (it shoots <2" at 200yds) although there are brighter scopes available (for example, the 3-9 x 40 Zeiss Conquest, 2.5-8 Vari-X III, a Leupold VXIII or, as was mentioned earlier, a nice Swaro).

The rifle is no lightweight, but it is nice and handy. Still, there's not much point putting a huge piece of glass on it.

Leupold Vari X 111 2.5 x 8 with Sako Original Style Rings would be nice My personal choice would be Zeiss 3.5 x10 x44 maximum clarity and brightness .

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.Gives me some stuff to check out and think over.

I knew what the rifle was supposed to weigh when i got it but it just feels so handy i thought that it can't be that weight(8lbs) so i weighed it.

It was.

I know it will never be a light weight rifle and was well aware of that when i bought it.
Sorry if it came across that i was trying to make it so.That wasen't what i meant.

I just don't want to add even more unneccasary weight to it if i don't have to, like with a large piece of glass like A-zone was saying or by putting on one scope when i could get a comparable quality scope that is lighter.

thanks.

Don't overlook a Leupold VX3-L or VX7-L. I love the way you can have a 50mm aperture, but be able to mount it as low on the rifle as a 36mm.
I find that feature alone makes it the nicest option on a hunting rifle.

I would put the unfired 20" barrelled Sako Mannlicher away for another 20 years and then sell it to someone.

I am a Sako Lover, I own three at the moment, but I wouldn't own a 270 with a 20 inch barrel having loaded for one for a while. I played with one of these Full stock Sako's in 338 win mag and the muzzle blast was really something, plus the 20 inch barrel won't do the 270 justice.

If you do decide to keep it and use it, the best mounts in my experience for Sako's are Burris, they are really strong, very precise and far lighter than Optiloks. BTW, the lightweight Talley's aren't available for Sako.

Hi martinbns,

I really love Sako's as well .

I am no collecter though and i bought the gun specifically to hunt with so i really don't know.Would the value of it actually increase that much over twenty years to really make it worth doing that?

There is no box just the rifle, rings and owners manual.

I realize the barrel length is not optimum for the 270win and the shortest i have had one in that caliber before was 22 inches.

Was it increased muzzle blast that you didn't like in the 270? Or just the shorter barrel in that caliber?

I realize i will have some loss in performance but like the handiness of the shorter rifle.

Do you think that 2 inches of barrel makes that big of a differance?

I have owned a few shorter barreled guns and i didn't mind them at all but i have no actual experience with any long action cartridges in barrels shorter then 22 inches.

I have read that the 338 was very bad but the 270 wasen't to bad in these rifles for muzzle blast but as i said i have no real world experiance with it to actually know.

Where as you have experiance with one and loaded for one before do you have any powder suggestions for optimum performance from the shorter barrel?

Getting of my own topic i know but thought where you had experiance loading for one in this caliber i would take the opportunity to pic your brains a little.

Thanks for the tips about the rings as well.Appreciate it.

If you're looking for "handiness", that clearly trumps whatever you stand to lose in velocity (and gain in muzzle blast ;) ). That said, the .270 Win. is going to sound relatively "loud"/sharp whether it's a 20" barrel or a 22" barrel.

If you haven't already tried it, load up some 130 grain Triple Shocks with a starting load of H4831 and see how it performs. My guess is you'll have your hunting/slay whatever critter needs slaying load right there.

Sakos are great rifles, no doubt.
