mossberg maverick mag tube?

i was looking at my Maverick 88 today, and i noticed the spring in the mag tube is pretty stiff. i loaded a couple rounds and ejected them. the loading was difficult due to the spring being stiff and when i ejected them, i found out why. there's a fair bit of rust inside the mag tube, and it's stiffening up the spring. the last time i used the gun it was pissing rain, sleet and hail and muddy etc. i gave the gun a good workout, then i stripped it down and cleaned it up real good. however, i never even thought of the mag tube.:redface:

how do i take apart the mag tube to clean it up and lube it? :confused:

It unscrews from the receiver. It is very tight! Might be a job best left to a gunsmith.
 
is there no way to get it off yourself? say clamping it in a vise or something? or is the spring under such tension you really need to know what your doing?

i dumped some hoppes 9 down there, and loaded and unloaded it several time, working it each time. it seems alot smoother now, but i don't if it'll just be a temporary fix.
 
1st off, it was a mistake to buy a gun you cant clean.
2nd thing, allways clean you mag tube, it is the most important part of the working action of any shotgun.
i have fixed 100,s of guns because of lack or care and cleaning to the mag tube.
you mag follower may be rusted as well.
if you like cheaper guns buy a norinco hp9 or mossberg, least you can clean it.

this is absurd: the mossbergs mag tube is very easy to clean.

a VISE??? a GUNSMITH??? sweet jesus, no!
its usually not that tight at all. you dont need a vise or any such silly thing.
remove the barrel, remove the forend, grab the mag tube and twist - its a standard thread. it cant rust solid because its threaded into an aluminum receiver. if you need a better grip use one of those silicone pot pad thingies you get at the dollar store.

after it is out, you can easily scrub it with a stiff bore brush and solvent.

1st off, i can clean it. the maverick is very simple to strip down and clean.
2nd thing, cleaning the mag tube totally slipped my mind. i was cleaning 5 guns at the time, and i was bound to forget something.
3rd, my maverick has over 3000rounds through it, without a problem.
4th, my maverick is made by mossberg. lol.

thanks, i'll have a go at it. :)

update: i got it. had to use a pair of pliers with a cloth for padding to get grip. but it's been opened and cleaned. works like new now. :)

I spray the mav88 with carb cleaner ever few range trips... Then a few good spray of CLP...

I Shoot 1200 Rounds so far without taking it appart and I have yet to have a problem...

The side saddle is the big reason I dont want to take it apart... lol...
 
you mav 88 mag be marked mossberg but its not made by them .

who's it made by?

the box said mossberg on it. the manual is a mossberg manual. on the receiver it says "maverick by mossberg". Maverick is linked to from the Mossberg website. looks like Maverick is a subsidiary of Mossberg. i can thus conclude, is made by mossberg or a company connected with them.
 
I have a Mossberg 500. Never cleaned the mag tube on it until a couple days ago. Unscrewed easy enough. Opened up the crimp a little and everything came out. Spring was rusty so it got a good dose of solvent and breakfree. Follower had some crap on the side of it that was making it catch a little while pushing the shells out. Ran a cotton shotgun cleaning thingy (?) down the tube and it came out black lol. Once all cleaned up and put back together it started working like a dream again.

Mossberg uses wooden dowels for mag plugs and they hold moisture ... causes rusty mag tube springs.
 
if i owned a Mossy 500 again, one of the first things id replace was the factory stamped metal follower. not only can it bind due to rust, but when reassembling the mag tube you need to push the follower in a bit or the stamped edge can be pinched between the mag tube and receiver. this is no big deal, but if you dont notice it until youre in the field its pretty annoying since you have to partially strip the gun to correct it.
