I was thinking about selling my Moose rifle, since I dont moose hunt no more. What do you guys think would be a fair price for my rifle. It is a mid 1980's model Remington model 700 BDL monte carlo walnut stock in .300 win mag. Its not in perfect shape, but it is in good shape, just the usual wear from hunting over the years. It shoots excellent, excellent bore, and very accurate. I put a $70 limsaver recoil pad on it also.

What do you guys think I should ask for it without the scope and with the scope( 2 year old Burris Fullfiel II 3x9x3 ballisticplex ) I paid $300 plus tax for the scope and I also installed butler creek flip up lenses.

This rifle sells for about $1000 new at most places I have scene, so I was thinking about asking

$700 without scope

$950 with the scope and rings, mounted ready to hunt.

Does this sound like a fair, and a realistic price or does this sound a bit too much?

Let me know what you guys think I should ask for it?

Im not desperate for the money so I dont want to get dinged to badly on it.

I would guess around $800 with the scope. Most people don't know good qualtiy like that when they see and would rather buy a new plastic gun nowadays. I have bought several 700 BDL's over the the last few years, and the most I pay for the gun is $550.

Sorry to hear you are no longer going to be in the hunting community.
Best Regards

Thanks for the input. What do you think the scope should increas the value by?????I am still going to be hunting, just not moose hunting. I went moose hunting for a couple years with little sucess and I spend alot of money and have to travel so bloody far. I have switched to Whitetail deer hunting up north during rifle season. The .300 mag is a little over kill for a deer, I use a SKS for rifle, or 30-30 lever, sometimes a .308 if I need to reach out and touch something from a stand. My .300 mag will be missed if I sell it, from a collectors standpoint, but it could pay for most of my next shotgun.

Like Gerich, sorry to hear you are finished with hunting. In my honest opinion, I think your BDL is probably a beautiful hunting rifle but for someone looking to save, $700 without a scope for a 35+ year old gun is probably a bit steep when comparing to a new 700 sps or other comparable new entry/mid level gun. I would say somewhere between $500 - $600, keep in mind you might have to go a bit lower if you want a quick sale. Good luck

Sell the scope and rings separately and start at $675 asking price and be prepared to bargain. A Remington 700 BDL is a higher quality rifle that what you have today in the SPS line but I guess some people like new guns better.

As far as the scope, $175 would be a maximum and the rings, would depend what make they are but don't expect to get new value for them.

And just keep in mind that you will usually recover less of your investment by selling a more complete package. It might sell faster but the price might not be what you expect.

And if it were me, I would not hesitate for one second to use your package to hunt deer. Just select the proper bullets and if you handload, just load down a bit.

Mid 80's is 35 years ago. Holy ####, i am older than i thought:D

To awnser the OP, the gun itself is probably in 500-600 range, depending on the blueing, etc. And the scope mounted might add 150. Split them up and you might get 200 for the scope.

If you're in no hurry list the package $800 shipped & insured. Which is probably more than you have in it. The gun is not a collectible item,so what they sell for today has no bearing on the value of used 25 year old gun.

Okay guys, thanks for the input. I may just keep it, because its a nice rifle and, for that price its not really worth me selling it. I do have about $900 invested in it. When I feel the quality of my 25 year old rifle compared to a brand new SPS, well the SPS just feels cheap. If I could come close to break even, I probably would of sold it. However if I am going to take a loss on it then I will keep it, who knows I may go moose hunting one day again anyways.

I could always take it Deer hunting with me and see how many backflips I could get a whitetail to do if I hit it from 100 yards in the treestand...LOL.. just kidding.

I actually have one more question about this gun though. The main reason I thought about selling it, would be to put money towards a new 31/2 inch 12 gauge semi auto shotgun. Do you guys think it would be a fair trade if I posted it for my rifle package complete for a used 3 1/2 inch 12 semi auto shotgun like a browning gold or silver, or a winchester sx2 in 3 1/2 super mag. I figure a used shotgun should be valued at around the same, or do you guys figure a used semi auto super mag would be worth more??

I bought a BDL in 30-06 about 5 years ago. About the same age as yours, beautiful condition. Came with a Weaver 3-9 which I replaced last year with a Bushnell 3000 on Leupold QR's. Added a Limbsaver and a quick klip too.
I paid $700 plus taxes at a local Vancouver Dealer. Maybe I paid a bit too much but it was in excellent shape and a lefty which I needed.
I'm very happy with it. :D

Okay lets review, you have a 35year old rifle that may be worth $600, those 2 semis go for about double what a NEW Rem. 700 goes for, any used semis of those two models will be quite new as they haven't been making them long, so you do the math.....It's similar to the poster asking 2.5k for the Win.95 in "excellent" condition, really NRA "Fair", creative pricing? Wishful thinking?

bought an almost new bdl in 30-06 2 years ago that was made in 81 . didnt look like it had seen the light of day to many times. paid 500 for it would have been 650 with a leupold vx something 3x9

The only opinions that matter on this question are those of fellows who actually have a shotgun that meets your specification and who want a nice older 700 in .300 WinMag. Stick it in the EE headed WTT Only and see what happens.

By the way mid 80's makes it 25 years old if that really makes a difference.

Not a lot of guns increase or keep all their value over the years especially if they have been hunted....unfired is a different thing.

I bought a Model 700 bdl with bushnell scope and sling for my uncle in the EE for 550$ shipped a few years back.

Well, after looking around alot, I paid $600 for the rifle and recoil pad 5 years ago. Then I spent $300 on the scope and about another $150 on mounting it and the flip up lense covers. All in all I have over $1000 into it. I know that means nothing though on the resale market. I figure a used Browning or Winchester super mag shotgun is worth about $800. Maybe my gun is worth a bit less than that, but I wouldnt mind throwing a hundred bucks with it to get what I want. Maybe I will post it for a trade, Maybe not, I was just courious what everyone thought would be a fair deal for it.

Thanks for the input though, I have a good idea what I should do now.

About the trade, I would say don't do it. Trades never seem the best way to get value, because the two parties have to each have the same desires.
Also, of course, I wouldn't want that type, super magnum, on a drunken bet!
If I were you, I would advertise it for sale on the EE at the top end of prices suggested here, or a bit more, and offer to take a rifle as partial trade.
That way there will be lots out there who would like to upgrade to your rifle, and here is a chance to do it and get rid of their old rifle, at the same time.

Trade

I would place it in the EE as a trade only item for your selected shotguns. I have the same rifle in 30-06 and would not get rid of it anytime soon as it was my first centerfire purchase. I also have a Browning Gold 3-1/2" 12 gauge and new it cost me $1100+. I don't think your offer of a trade +/- $$ is unfounded as firearm conditions vary. If your looking for $700-$800 for the package, then your not far off your mark for an even trade.

Just be open to offers and have an idea of what your willing to spend of trade for.
