STI GP6 Opinions?

Hi folks,

Newbie here. I'm getting back into shooting after a long break. Was out this weekend with some co-workers, tried some CZ's, Glocks, Ruger's, etc. Of the one's I held the S&W MP9 felt the best but I didn't get to fire it.

The one I have not been able to try is the new GP6. A buddy has one of their 1911's and loves it. Just wondering if anyone has any hands on? I'd be looking for simple range shooting and practice to improve my skills (or lack of). The reviews I've read are promising.

I have one, and can't say enough about it.

The trigger is excellent in SA and DA. The recoil is very soft feeling. The grip feels great.

I have 4-5k on mine without any failures.

Own two, an original 2-tone K100 and a Mk6 (same as the STI GP6, just no label). Love both of them. Use the Mk6 for IPSC and have gone through several thousand rounds with nary a problem. As Canuck said, the trigger is excellent. The reset is almost scary short .
The mag release can be a PITA. I'm looking to replace mine with a big button soon.
Other than that, great pistols.

I'm intrigued by this gun. might have to be my next polymer gun...but I'm in the same boat as you - haven;t seem one in person.

STI makes 1911's they doesn't actually make the GP6...it's made by a Slovakian company and used to be imported here as Grand Power K100

The feel of the GP6 grip would compare to the small and medium grip of the M&P. Even those with small hands manage the GP6 well in single-action. (Double-action may be another story, depending upon finger length.) Subjectively, I prefer the grip feel of the GP6.

The feel of the trigger is markedly different. I'm trying to love the M&P's hinged trigger, but it hasn't happened yet. I'd take a G17 trigger over an M&P9 trigger any day. The double-action trigger of the GP6 is heavier than the striker-fired pistols but it is still very manageable, and while the striker-fired pistol offers a consistent trigger pull, it cannot compare to the excellent single-action trigger of the GP6. The single-action trigger of the GP6 is as good as anything out there. There is no question that the GP6 is better suited to action target shooting.

Recoil definitely feels lighter in the GP6.

What do I not like about the GP6?

* The thumb safety does not feel like a 1911 safety. It could be re-designed, and I hope that it is re-designed to mimic an STI's 1911 thumb safety.
* The OEM sights on the base pistol . (Replacements are available.)
* Holster selection for duty and concealed carry applications is still quite limited. (Blade-Tech is one of the only options.)
* Take-down is not quite as simple as with either of above the striker-fired pistol options.

On balance, I'd suggest that you handle a GP6 before buying anything else.
