I just purchased an SR-22 from P&D and I am in the process of installing a Dlask 12" barrel but the factory barrel won't budge. I've replaced the factory barrels on a few 10/22's but I have never experienced one that was this tight. It is as if it was installed with a hydraulic press! I am afraid if I use much more force I will crack the receiver.

Has anyone else experienced a very hard to remove barrel on a 10/22? Any tricks to removing it without risking the receiver?

Thanks.

Never done it myself, but have you tried cooling the rifle? A good trick is to take one of those compressed air "electronics cleaner" canisters, flip it upside down, and voila! Liquid CO2! Great for quick spot cooling.

I tried cooling the rifle in the freezer for a few hours and then warming the receiver but no luck. Maybe I will try leaving the barrel/receiver in the freezer overnight.

Try installing the bolt and recoil spring in the receiver. Pull it back and let it slam against the breech face of the barrel a few times with the V-block removed. This will often loosen a tight 10/22 barrel.

That helped thanks. I never even thought of using the bolt. I had to cycle the bolt about 40 times to get the barrel to move about 1/16". I was then able to tap it out with a brass punch.

Thanks everyone for the replies :)

Cheers!

Its actually good it fits so tight. With the nordic kit there is not much supporting the barrel, so an overspec barrel is a good thing to prevent sagging.

dont jump in pullin too hard yet...the new(er) 10/22 barrels are glued in......heres some removal instructions... http://ruger22.com/newpages/glue.htm

Interesting, I hadn't heard of them bonding in the barrels. Although when I finally was able to remove the factory tube there were no signs of any bonding agent. There was some overspray inside of the receiver of what ever they use to coat the outside.

The Dlask 12" barrel needed some fitting to go into the receiver but looks really good. It sticks out from the hand-guard about 9/16". That plus the collapsible stock makes for a compact little package. I can't wait to take it out to the range.

Cheers.
