Have a Ruger 77/17HM2, a nice little Marlin 717M2, and a Volquartsen on order. Great round, great rifles...just don't believe (or spread) the rumors it's dead, because it deserves better than being the victim of a self fulfilling internet prophecy.
 
Own two, gave one to my dad. Could live without it. Don't think it's a dead round. However, .22LR is cheaper and easier to find. And the dead rabbit doesn't care what it has been shot with.
 
i'm not so sure that 17 HMR is unsafe in semi autos. Volquartsen never stopped producing semis in 17 HMR. Also, I would much rather have the HMR than the M2. My thoughts are that if i am going to do something different than a 22lr, it might as well have the most punch i can find in a rimfire.

There has been recall after recall after recall for .17 HMR where they explicitly state that it is unsafe for use in semi-auto firearms.
 
I recently bought a Cooper in 17Mach 2,I chose it over the 17Hmr because of the cost of ammunition.It didn't hurt that I got a great deal on the rifle.
