I'm looking to add something in between my .308 and my .338WM, for everything from mice to moose. Looking at fast and flat, and will be a Rem 700 as I already have a McMillan coming for it...

Narrowed to buying:

- SS 7mm Rem
- SS .257wby

or building:

- SS 7mm Rem
- SS .280 or .280 AI
- SS 7mm Wby

Thoughts?

7mmRM is at the top of my list right now, but do I buy or build? Can I expect a reasonable increase in accuracy over a factory barrel, or not worth it for a hunting rig?

The .257 bee is one of my enthusiasms.I've a couple on the go now, and one happens to be a 700 LSS. The other is a Mark V that has a couple moose to it's credit so the moose to mice thing is within reach. Despite all this, my recommendation is none of the above. Put that Mcmillan to good use holding a .300 Win mag. It's got moose to mice and longrange shooting writen all over it. Part workhorse, part racehorse.
'Course you better get a .257 as well just to make sure. They are alot of mild mannered, deadly fun. Just remember that it's all racehorse.

Why don't you split the difference between the .257 and 7mm and go with a .264Win mag or 6.5-284?........

.264WM is another possibility. Would be building that one for sure!:D

I've had a couple .300WM in the past, just doesn't do anything for me these days. Although, I do still have dies, brass, powder and bullets for it...:)

Also have dies for the .30-338...

Having owned a few AI rounds I would rather eat worms than do the fire form thing again. Best of luck to those that want one.
Hope you like worms! :D

All that trouble to get something almost as good as the 7mag?
The 7mag might be boring, but it rips little holes, shoots the 160's-175's plenty fast, and you can buy it at the corner store.

Just curious, but why not a 300Win?

Picking up my .25-06AI on Friday,I kinda got sidetracked with that, but now it's time to start the 6.5 RemMag.I think you need to build SOMETHING in 6.5!!!! Mur

Not that I would ever concider one myself, but if you want a bore size between .308 and .338, and fast and flat, the .323 is about in the middle............8mm REM Mag.............only a thought.

Why not take advantage of that huge 700 action :) and put some 8mm rem mag or 7mm STW rounds in there......not needed but right up there in cool factor.

7 WBY would be plenty cool too.

I just recently got my first 25-06, and I am very impressed. It is a standard 700 SPS stainless, dropped into a Bansner (SP?) stock, with Talley lightweights and a Vortex scope. I have only tried one load for it so far, 75 grain V Max in front of 53 grains IMR 4350, and although I know I have room to go before max load, this load seems very accurate and it has already killed one coyote.

I also have recently acquired a 280 in a 700 Mountain Rifle which I have not shot yet, but I love the weight and balance.

So if I were to give my opinion, I guess I would say 25-06 first, and 280 second. :dancingbanana:

Good Luck!
