I just picked up a brand new Mossberg Model 835 Ulti-Mag waterfowl from Bass Pro. Because of this damn trigger lock nonsense, even on the guns disassembled in the box, I wasn't able to try the gun out at the store.

Upon getting home and assembling it, discovered that it will not lock closed; the barrel is in properly and you can see the locking lug of the bolt engaged into the recess in the receiver. It's as if the bolt release behind the trigger guard is always depressed.

Are they not supposed to lock closed when the forearm is all the way into the forward position?

What are my options here - can I bring it back into the store for exchange? Anybody had any similar issues with this gun and/or Bass Pro?

Yes the action is supposed to lock closed.

I would call the shop where you bought it and see what the say. Some shops will exchange it, some will offer to try and repair it, some will tell you to contact Mossberg. It is really up to store policy.

Update:

I brought the back to Bass Pro today, fully expecting them to say, "Oh, well..." ship the gun off to the Mossberg repair depot and wait forever for my gun. (That was my experience with another major firearms retailer, who shall remain nameless at this time.)

However, I was more than pleasantly surprised when they offered to do a straight exchange right then and then (lots of paperwork, but not their fault.)

Overall, an outstanding example of customer service, and super happy with both the gun and the service. :dancingbanana:

I must be in another part of the world other than Canada. Oh I see, I'm from western Canada. ;) I just bought a mossberg, brand new in the box, and it was intact. Not dissasembled. The store must have a list of idiots working there. Take it back and demand an exchange or your money back.
