Hi everyone,

I have a Remington 700 SPS SS in 30-06 that I would like to spruce up with a better stock. I primarily use this rifle for hunting and practice at the range --- I am not a competitive target shooter.

My dilemma is that the fit of the factory SPS stock is almost perfect for me and I would like to pick a fiberglass stock that preserves that fit. However, since I'll have to order the stock, I won't be able to try any out ahead of time, so I'm looking for recommendations.

Here's my criteria:

1) Fit similar to the standard LA SPS stock.
2) Weight (I don't mind adding a few ounces, but this is a hunting/walking rifle)
3) Quality (I don't mind doing some finishing/inletting work and bedding)
4) Price (cheaper is always better, but I have a budget that can afford a MacMillan).

From my initial searching, it seems that B&C offer the widest selection and their Alaskan series seem like they might be a good match, but I'd love to hear some first hand experience.

Thanks very much,
Stirling

1) Fit similar to the standard LA SPS stock. YES, and you can pick the LOP to fit you perfectly

2) Weight (I don't mind adding a few ounces, but this is a hunting/walking rifle) bit lighter

3) Quality (I don't mind doing some finishing/inletting work and bedding) already finished, many colors to choose from

4) Price (cheaper is always better, but I have a budget that can afford a MacMillan). on sale right now @ 24hourcampfire

I love my Laminated Boyd thumbhole stock. The stability of synthetics with the warmth and beauty of real wood. Best of both worlds!

I have 2 B&C medalists on order right now. If I remember correctly, they were about $265 CDN (each) all in to my door.

I'd love a McMillian but with 2 stocks needing replacing, the $500 option currently looked more attractive than the $1000+ option.

Gotta pick and choose where money gets spent or else I'd have a gun safe full of $3,000+ rifles.

One other option is a Hi-tech/Bansner if you will do the finishing. Very nice fit, but when all is said and done a mcmillan isn't that much more.(probably about $100 US for the standard fill models)

I don't drink the McMillan Koolaid.:D

Not saying they're a bad stock but I don't need a McMillan, turrets, and blue electrical tape to make me feel warm and fuzzy.

I've got 3 Brown Precisions that I think are nice. I like them because of the longer grip.

Have a couple of Wildcat's that I think are nice.
Would like to get a Bansner and see how it works.

The last 3 700 SS SPS's I bought were IIRC $599.
A McMillan will run you a little better than that I think.;)

Right now I think a mcmillan is $438 plus probably $25 for shipping, plus exchange/taxes(say 550ish). A Bansner is $255 plus shipping/exchange/taxes, add a recoil pad, a bunch of your time and some supplies to fill/bed/paint and you're not that far off a mcmillan. A mcmillan Edge fill is about $80 US more, to drop about 8-10 ounces.(probably the cheapest weight reduction in a rifle (the $80 difference, not the $500+ total cost)). Bansner has one or two "styles" (cheekpiece or not), mcmillan has several for most actions.

I bought my first McMillan because they are the only ones that inlet for the Sako 75, and a lightweight to boot. Now I buy them, because I can get them inletted for most actions in the same Sako Hunter stock, which feels/fits the best to me. They'll inlet the Sako Hunter style for any Sako , Rem 700, Rem 7, Win 70, Ruger, Savage, Abolt, and I'm sure others I've missed...

Not saying they are the only option out there, but they fit me perfectly, so I'll stick with them. I don't need the blue tape though...:p
