Howdy,

I don't know much about this firearm except for the fact it has been in the family for a long time. I am trying to place a value and get any input on it.

The blueing is almost gone. Will re-blueing add to the value or take away from it? There are no other holes under the ring bases and those that are there look stock. There is the odd scratch on the stock but it is in great shape, it looks like it was varathaned. It doesn't look like it has been modified in any way. Butt plate is original.

It is not mint by any means but I think it is in good shape for a 60 year old hunter.

The scope is a Weaver KV 2.75-5X power with Weaver Pivot Mounts. They allow the scope to be flopped over to use the iron sights. It is well worn on the surface. Do I leave it on the gun or remove for sale? It looks to be a period scope.

Serial number is 90### which should put it at a 1948 AFAIK.

IMHO, you should leave it alone, it might devalue it. That my friend is a nice rifle, CRF pre 64 model 70's are IMO the best of the best

I think you're right, it has that look to it.

The only thing I may do is remove the varathane and oil the stock.

Searching tonight I didn't realize that this gun had such a following. It is going to make it harder to get rid of it I decide to go that way. I will most likely never replace it if I do. It's just that it never gets used and has been collecting dust in my safe for 20 years. I don't think I have put 40 rounds down it in all that time.

ugh, I was hoping it was a common $200 rifle...easy to throw up on the EE that way.:(

What a treasure. I was looking for one in 30-06 so I could build a rifle replica of the one used by Carlos Hathcock...the famed USA military decorated sniper. Lots of Model 70s but not many in 30-06 are available.

haha

You should of got to me last night! I probably would have gone for it.

It looks like you might be missing a 1 in front of that number. That may be a little high, but for the EE, it should be about right. :D

Given it's history, I would keep it in the Family as well. You would have a hard time replacing it, if you ever changed your mind.

Retail Value $700- $800 nice rifle the Monte Carlo stock version adds a little extra value as everyone knows condition is everything in the collectors market place this is a shooter . Keep it and enjoy it .

I have a 1947 Win Mod 70 30-06 and I would never give it up. In your case you have not mentioned how it shoots but if it is any good it should shoot groups of three at 100 yds that touch on a good day. Mine likes 180gr Fed Nosler Partitons. I have put a Bushnell Elite 3200 3x9x40 on it. It is my moose and elk rifle.
Yours looks like a beauty.Keep it!

Firearms don't necessarily have to be used to provide pleasure. There is nothing wrong with keeping special piece, and taking it out of the safe from time to time to clean it, or simply admire it, and have others do the same. While I do not consider myself a collector, I do have a few guns that see very little if any use, but I have no intention of getting rid of them. Unless you really need the cash for something else, just appreciate it and keep it.

The market for pre 64 model 70's is as good right now as it is ever going to be. I'm thinking that the next generation of shooters may not hold the high regard for these rifles as some of us do now.
If it were mine and I'd not wish to shoot it I would sell it. FS

That is a nice rifle! If I were you I would keep it and shoot it as it is really in "shooter" condition. If the stock was not refinished and all original it would be worth way more than its present condition, could be worth twice as much to the right buyer, but sadly it is not because of the refinish job.

Don't get me wrong, still a very nice rifle and has family history. Hence why I say keep it and enjoy it. It is not worth a small fortune as some would lead you to believe.

It is a shooter, keep it in the family and enjoy it! You will regret selling it down the road if you do.

I'd say $300ish. It's a pre-64, but quite worn. Your main competition is brand new rifles starting at these prices like the Stevens and Marlin bolt rifles.

Thanks everyone. Some great info. And some great pms!

It is a good shooter as I recall, even with the goofy pivot mounts.

It wouldn't be the first gun I would sell if I needed the money, I was just giving it it's quarterly fondle and oiling when I thought I should find out more about it and its value.

I guess I will get rid of the 338WM Savage first and see what direction I want to go with my next rifle.
