I just finished Parkerizing my Norinco 1911. I used a home made mix of phosphoric acid, manganese Dioxide, and distilled water.

Most of the pistol turned out really well, except the slide. Its all blotchy and uneven, and looks to be caked in some black stuff. The finish also looks really thin compared to the rest, on the frame light tool marks are not visible any more, but on the slide, even minor marks are still vary visible. All the parts were degrease the same way, all were handled the same as well. But for some reason the slide looks terrible. Could different metals or treatment at the factory effect the proccess?

Found the cable here it is

The bloches on the frame are grease, the frame looks very good. (serial# edited out)

This is strange. I didn't have this problem at all when I parked my Norinco 1911A1. The slide and the frame turned out to be the same in finish and color.

Why don't you try again, the slide only this time? Degrease it completely, do not handle it with your hands, and put it in the pot right away......

I would also love a PM on the chemical source for home parkerizing, as well as some tips on how-to or a site with directions. I did some mods to my Norc M213 and want to refinish it soon as my bluing touch up looks like a 70 year old nursing home residents ass after a bowl of All Bran!

get to one of hungrys M14 clinics :D thats where i learned it.

the thing is the frame, slide release, safety, barrel bushing, and hammer all have went through it twice as they were uneven after the first. the slide has gone through three times. I might bead blast and then re-do it from scratch.

what is the purpose of putting a pen or cartridge through the trigger housing when taking a photo?

ive always wondered about this.

Would love to, all I need now is a clinic in Manitoba and Im there! I also have an M14 in need of some work by him so it would be great.

VERY HELPFUL!!! Thank you for the site link.

It lifts the firearm up off the background and makes it easier to photograph from some angles.

Almost looks like the slide wasn't bare metal ebfore you parked it.

There is a thread here on home parkerizing in the gunsmithing section and several good ones on the m1911.org forums

When you do manganese parking, make sure you let it cook for 10-15 minutes before you add the parts. this gives the acid time to dissolve the manganese (it doesn't dissolve all of it , you will always have sludge). Make sure it's degreased (I warm the part under a heat lamp and then wipe it down with laquer thinner. Make sure the part is suspended, and make sure the tank is big enough (I have found if the part is too close to the bottom or sides it sometimes comes out blotchy) When the part comes out of the tank I dunk it in water and I give it a wipe with a clean rag before I dunk it in oil. If I dont;t like the finish I immediately wipe it down again with the laquer thinner and toss it back in the tank. ( I usually put it in the tank flipped over so that the side of the part that was at the bottom is now at the top).

Sources for the chemicals Manganese dioxide and Zinc Oxide are at the pottery supply house (google them) $7/kilo each and they do mail order. Phosphoric Acid Homegrown hydroponics $14/500ml (I bought some yesterday). It's not rocket science and don't be afraid to toss it back in the tank and don't bother to sandblast the second time all it's going to do is get blacker:D

humm very interesting, Dosent the sand blast make a rough finish in the end ?

What if you polished the whole slide and frame to get a perfect smooth finish, would the Park solution hitch to it ? or It must be rough . Wouldnt that give a smoother and uniform look ?

I just ordered a Nork from Marstar last week I think I will do some refinishing work too .

Yeah it's a cooey .410. Someone gave it to me a long time ago they had some snow in the barrel and bulged the end. I chopped it to 18" and parkerised it. I just got some teflon, so I'm going to teflon it too. I wish I'd chopped it years ago for bush chickens.
