My New Hunting Dog

LOL...point of order...this is a silver labrador which on dog forums can become a pretty touch subject LOL....He came from a Chocolate mother and a Silver father...

Holy crap, I was letting the weimaraner slide since it they are a versatile dog, but then I find out you post a pic of a LAB?!?!?!?! WTF. :kickInTheNuts:

I DO NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT TO SAY TO YOU MAN......

Okay, I am just giving you a hard time. :D

Silver lab; first time I have heard of such a thing. I thought his hair looked a bit odd, but I have seen the longhaired weimer's and thought it was just a coat issue. Are you sure there is no weimer in the blood line? I have seen "red" labs, but no silver ones.

Learn something new every day. Thanks for posting that.

About a grand. Not sure what Pine Ridge is charging, but I would assume they are comparable with most breeders.

What you are paying for is a very high (probably one of the highest available) chance of getting a healthy, exceptional hunting dog.

No such thing as a silver or red labrador. They are the creation of frew frew wankers who mixed other breeds with labs so they could call them rare and charge more money.

Ah yes - there's the touchy part rp was talking about. :D

I love all dogs - but calling it a silver lab is misleading. Weim-Lab cross would be more appropriate. I guess that doesn't sell, though.

still a cool lookin dog (the silver whateveritis), and hopefully a great hunter!

I'm workin on bringing the wife around to letting me get a hunting dog...her dad bred pit's for years so she wants a pitbull, but I want a dog that can come out in the bush with me and be useful for something other than scaring bears.

Ok...no more hijack after this....FWIW the dog is AKC registered purebred with the color that most closely matches shown as chocolate. This is a hugely controversial issue amongst hardcore lab folks. The father is AKC registered silver and the mom was AKC registered chocolate.

I did a ton of research on this prior to buying this pup and I think it is reasonable to assume some cross breeding took place with Weims back in the mid 1960's at one specific kennel most can be traced to.

I do however personally consider this dog to be a silver lab but then again I have never been one to really get along lol...

RSP will be checking out of this topic now and once again express amazement that a Pudelpointer is out retrieving beavers...amazing. Very cool dogs and congrats to those who own them!!

We forgive you, but only because you like our dogs, and appear to realize they are the best! :p

Seriuously though, keep us (those here at CGN who love hunting dogs) informed of your pup's progress. Most of us are not as puritan as we come across, and are just as happy to hear about a '57 who can put birds it the bag, as those high $$ purebred.

But now...... MORE PUDELPOINTERS!!!

This was Parker's first "fur" retrieve. He was about 7 months old at the time. Bloody Jack was damn near as big as he was.

Pudel pointers are incredible dogs, I train with a lady that has two of them and they hunt great, swim better than a fish and retrieve as if they were on a steel cable. I love the moustache and beard too, adds a lot of character to a great working dog.

Congratulations on your new hunting buddy! Looks like your young lad is enjoying him too. Keep him involved with the training and hunting, and you will have two great hunting partners soon!

With the PP does the fur keep growing and have to be trimmed?

Nope. It grows to a certain length and then will shed out. Usually they are quite hard (wire) haired, so they do not require a lot of brushing, etc. But the longer haired ones can pick up burrs, but not nearly as bad as a golden, springer or setter.

can the PP guys get into ,ore detail on the shedding of the breed...

I heard that the PP with shorter hair shed more than the ones with the longer wire type hair...

I really want one but the excessive shedding could be a show stopper for the wife.

Any info would be appreciated!
