Remington Model 8

To tell you the truth their a PITA to actually take hunting! Their heavy & a real pain to load & unload. I much prefer the 1910 Winny, that .401 cartridge is a great dear caliber, to bad ammo is so hard to get or make.

Another interesting tidbit is they were used in the Great War in the bi planes for trying to pick off huns in the trenches. This was just for trials as they abandoned it. The Germans likely got more hot casings down the back of their necks than casualties.

Took mine hunting last fall and I didn't mind packing the gun at all. I sure don't like looking through my tang sight compared to the irons. The gun is a shooter when it works.

Ahh man, thats what I wanted to do was take it hunting, old school.

Noel, what do you mean 'when it works'?

Only that the first time I took it out shooting 85gr BT's it seemed to cycle fine and shot very well. Second try with the 117s and it won't eject due to the bolt not retracting far enough. The load I used does dupicate the vintage ammo I tested in it.

We have it narrowed down to a previous owner reassembled it wrong (barrel sleeve assembly). I tore down the receiver already and it is all good.

Far as hunting with it I almost got a 140ish whitetail with it but passed due to the shot being too long. Cut the distance by almost half but he was running a does trail and not sticking around. That's how it goes sometimes when packing vintage iron.;)

Thanks Noel, doesn't sound as bad as I was preparing to expect. I want to bring it out to the woods this fall for the season assuming it all works correctly. I lugged an old 1886 Winchester last season, so this one looks and feels like it will be a little easier on the old arm while chugging through the mountains.

No worries, most everyone else I talk to have all good to say about them. 07 had a string of very bad luck following me around with most every purchase I made, this one no exception. Keep us posted on how it works and shoots for you.

Get some vintage hunting books and read up on how the old timers hunted with rifles of that era, they were pretty clever. :D

Nice rifle BTW. :)

Clever would have been if I'd stay in the thick timber instead of watch the field......

Did that this year and it paid off much better. Going thru Kieth's Big Game Hunting right now but better yet would be to visit with a couple folks from home who are in their 90's and get the dirt first hand.

I will indeed, I picked up a box of Rem Rem ammo and am going to try it out next week, will see how much that peep sight makes a difference.

Thanks Calum, thats a good idea on the old books!

I used to be pretty averse to ugly, years ago I would have thought the Model 8 fit that bill, but now I can't stand to leave things like that on the rack when I find them....

Looking through the vintage hunting pics on the Remington Model 8 site sure makes me excited for this fall.
