I know this is the hunting forum, and indeed I will try to incorporate hunting somehow.. but I figured I'd get the guys who know on this thread.

as some of you know, my sister lives in Yellowknife, and if you saw my pictures, you know sh likes to fish and has caught some damn big ones. (one even got her pic in the paper)

Now I'm no stranger to fishing ot trouting ( cod, salmon, flounder, brookies, and so on), but I am stranger to all the gear people use who are really into fishing, especially the big lake fishing and specific species ishing.

I enjoy fishing or trouting to catch my supper, put a few in teh frewezer, salt a few or whatever... I'm not into derby's and catch and release or trying to catch a fish that has a limit of one.

I have also used my good ol' Shakepeare that was made back in the 70's and not had an issue, but have tried and owned many other rods and reels over the years. I usually use a lucky strike spinner with 5 red beads, (I guess most would call it a silver spoon)

So I'm planning a trip to go fishing up north. I see my sister using a 5 of diamonds that is the biggest piece of metal I have seen since leaving the scrapyard. I go to the shop and guys atre buying egg sacs, pickeral(?) rigs, pink marshmallows, etc etc etc.

What's everyones thoughts? Rainbow and Char and lake trout?
I used my sliver spinner in the mountains and cleaned up on bull trout using just a worm,... maybe just lucky...

Also, I am looking at retiring my rod and reel, it is old and I get uneasy about dragging around everywhere, afrais sooner or later it will be lost or stolen.

Any suggestions for a decent rod and reel...

I'm not looking for some big honkin downrigger, just a decent reel ( I prefer the old style Mitchell and Shakespears that have the metal casing and the drag on the spool)

don't expect I'll be using it for anything much more than 10 pounds...

I like a med action rod, and thought it sounds funny, I like shorter rods cause I trout up and down brroks and creeks and wooded areas a lot, and find the shorter rods to be to my liking...

Thoughts

Here's afe wpics of my regular trouting catches,...nothing spectacular,...but enjoyable and good eating

buy an ugly stick. they can bend in half, i wouldn't try it but ive seen it done several times without problem. don have a clue how well they work for trout but down here there good for bass.

For casting lures for lake trout and char, if forced to choose from half a basement full of fishing stuff I'd pick the Len Thompson #1 spoon as top choice. Five of diamonds, followed by red/white and silver/blue.
Next most important is the leadhead jig. Good for casting, ice fishing, and very good for river fishing. 1/2 oz, rubber single curly tail. White.
Add a few #4 or #5 Mepps Aglia long spinners, (silver blade) and you are set. If you really want to get fancy, 4" Countdown Rapalas in the original silver/black colour are very effective.
You already have brook trout fishing equipment for rainbows, what works for one works for the other. Don't overlook very small dark jigs for trout.
Personally I would stay away from Ugly stick rods unless you are exceptionally clumsy. they are tough, but are unresponsive and heavy in my opinion. I like much of the tackle put out by Shimano, but Quantum and Rapala make mostly good stuff too.

They work fine for trout. Ive hauled in 10 lbs lakers on them, and 20+ pound pike on a 7 foot medium action ugly stick. And they are indestructible.

I can't say enough about ambassador bait casting reels. I have 6-7 of them ranging from a 5500-7000. They are awesome. Caught lots of salmon in the 40lb range with the 7000. As for rods, I guess that depends on if you will be trolling or casting.

I have a question, didn't know there were rainbows in that area, but there are lots of Grayling. I like small Mepps spinners and small dark jigs for grayling too, and again I'd suggest your brook trout tackle for them.

no rainbows there, but I will be getting rainbows here, and since most of my fishing will be done here, well I'd prefer to have a good setup for here, but will suffice for up in nWT..

For lakers you cant beat Acme Little Cleo's, Williams Wobblers or White tube jigs. For Specks/Brookies EGB's, Swedish Pimples, Northland Buckshots or just a good old fashion worm work.

For a rod I am assuming you will want a 2 piece for fishing rivers and such. I am a huge St. Croix fan...check them out...they have everything from 70$ Triumph series to the 350$ Legend Extreme's.

If I were you I'd go for an Avid Series 6'6" Medium Power, fast action rod. Its around a 150$ rod. Made from a great graphite blank and has a lifetime warranty. The 6'6" Medium, Fast is really the .30-06 of the fishing world.

Reels I'm a Daiwa biggot. I would throw on a Regal Xia 2500 size...again think .30-06 (multi-purpose). Or a Shimano Sonora again in the 2500 size.

Spool that with 10-15 lb Power-Pro or Fireline Tracer Braided line and you will be unstoppable.

I have used an UGLY STICK as well, it's nice.

I don't think you can use a worm for Bull Trout in Alberta. I am pretty sure all live bait is no good.

The reel is a 35 and the rod is light fast action, but seems a little more moderate/medium to me..

It's quite short ... I really like it. I think it will be great for the rivers streams and creeks and other holes I fish in..
