I had the exact same problem!
You can always try to find a laminated handguard and replace wood only portion of the handguard if you are really concerned about the appearance, and keeping your original gas tube. It's a bit of a PITA to get the pin out, not to mention that not all the laminated stocks have the same colouring - I had to strip and stain mine to get the colour to match the stock on my 56 Tula (I'm not a bubba, but a deep red handguard with a blonde/orange laminate stock sticks out like a sore thumb).
If you worried about damaging the gas tube, you can always purchase a spare complete gas tube assembly from any number of sources, but take note that it may require some fitting to work with your rifle.
