Hey CGNers, I was wondering if anyone knows if you can buy scope mounts (specifically the LaRue SPR models) in the U.S.A, and drive back with it from buffalo? I can't seem to get an answer from the stores in buffalo, and I defiantly don't want a one way ticket to Gitmo!

just declare it with your total amount that you are bring back, if customs doesn't ask you about buying gun parts dont tell them. do you really think you are going to get in a lot of trouble for mounts? worst case they take it at the border

Two issues:
Import into Canada: CBSA will be pleased to collect the taxes, GST + PST.
Export from the US: Totally different situation. Gun parts can only be exported by a licenced US exporter. If the value of the items exceed US$100, the licenced US exporter must obtain a specific export permit for the item.
If you just buy it yourself, and if you get tagged as you approach the border, you will have a bad day.

coming back into canada you talk to canadian customs, i;ve never had to talk to a US customs officer when entering canada.

No. The spot checks are on the US side, by US authorities.
Import into Canada is not the same as export from the US.

In my last 3 out of 4 trips to the US there have been US customs doing spot checks just before the Canadian border.

Even out in the middle-of-nowhere-B.C. border crossing I use when going back and forth to the U.S., I get checked on the U.S. side often enough to make me think that the small savings on any gun-related-stuff (usually less than $100 in savings) is not even remotely worth the risk.

YMMV.

Gitmo is warm! Unfortunately you are breaking U.S. law by doing so and all your risk lies on the U.S. side. Understand you are taking a big risk by so doing. Heard some guys have had good luck mailing them simply as metal fittings. Not recommending it be done, just heard it has been done.

It's not a money issue, its a "they don't ship them to canada issue." I don't understand what the big deal is about shipping them here. When you get right down to it, its just a clamp. I think I need to make some more phone calls to the U.S. and figure out if there is anyway I can do this legitimately.

Typically if it attaches to or is a part of a firearm, it's a gun part...So I have been told...I beg to differ at times as well...

I'd call Brownells. Brownells will explain the situation.
